Breastfeeding issues

Anyone else having issues with breastfeeding? My 2 month old wont just open his mouth to feed properly…you can tell he is obviously hungry but he doesn’t open wide enough to latch. I purchased some nipple cover to help him latch however its like a waste of time I am getting to the point of giving up as this is also frustrating for me. Is anyone having similar issues? How ar you dealing with it? Any advice would be welcomed.

No advice but I'm struggling too, have almost accepted I'll be in pain until I stop. He will be searching around and I'm thinking it's right there 🤣

Does he take a bottle?

I had the same problem and I cried about it for the first month of postpartum. However, if he will take a bottle, pump and give him your milk that way.

My baby had a really small mouth when he was tiny and I have big nipples. You might have already tried, but have you tried the flipple technique? It helped us in those first few months. 1 Hold your breast with your thumb on top and fingers on the bottom, with your thumb well back from the nipple base. 2 Press in with your thumb to tilt the nipple away from your baby. 3 Bring your baby to your breast with their chin touching your breast. 4 When your baby opens wide, release your thumb to allow your nipple to fall into your baby's mouth.

@Kim 😂 this is me too. At some point i had to ask the health visitor to check if baby can see cause i dont get the confusion.

@April yes he does

@Teka this is what i have been doing since he was in NICU but i was encouraged to start breastfeeding. Some days he get it and latch some days he is not. I

@Jenna thank you so much for this tip will definitely try at his next feed and see how he gets on i hope he finally gets it.

Call your local hospital and see if they have a lactation specialist you can see? or if they have a support group! We have a free lactation support group at our hospital on Thursday, which has been awesome.

Please get lactation advice from a specialist and hang in there - don’t give up!

Pinch your nipple and slide it in flat, like a pancake. You should consult with a lactation specialist. Don't give up. If it hurts too much, consider pumping.

Hiya, I’ve had this with both of mine. First time I think my daughter’s neck was sore from traumatic birth and it wasn’t until about 8 weeks that it started to ease. Mainly because she was a bit bigger and we took her to a cranial osteopath. with my second it was a tongue tie. Hope this helps!

Check out tongue tie with your doctor, because my first born wasn’t checked and i was not able to breastfeed, then he was 2 years I haded to take him privately to do procedure because nhs has a few years waiting list.

Babies are just silly. Breastfeeding is really hard. My baby went on a nursing strike at 2 months and just recently got back to breastfeeding at 3 months after a lot of persistence, face plant laid back breastfeeding positions, nipple shield use, pumping on one side before latching him on the other so he didn’t have to wait for the letdown, etc. I’ve heard these things happen for the entire breastfeeding journey so just stick with it mama you’re doing great.

Would definitely recommend oral assessment by a trained tongue tie practitioner x

I had a lot of trouble with breastfeeding. Both you and baby are learning. I found out because my LO was a c-section his whole body was tight because he didn’t get a ‘massage’ through the birth canal. We took him to the osteo for a few massage sessions and this helped him open his mouth wider and changed the way he fed. I would also recommend checking out ‘The Thompson Method’. They have some free videos and you can also book in a couple of 1 on 1 sessions via Skype. If you choose to do this I recommend seeing Rachel - she is the most senior and really knows her stuff. Good luck! I hope he’s able to latch properly very soon!

@Jess this is very helpful thank you so much.
