Tommee Tippee bottle teats

My little girl is 3 weeks old and formula fed and we use tommee tippee bottles. They came with size 1 teats as standard, but she was drinking 1-2oz then falling asleep from exhaustion and had poor weight gain after losing 8% of her birth weight so the midwives were concerned, and she's only just gotten back to her birth weight now. We changed her to the vari flow teats and she's gone from drinking 1-2oz on size 1 teats to drinking 3-4oz on the variflow teats. My only thing is on the vari flow teats she's coughing and spluttering sometimes and milk comes out the sides of her mouth because I think the flow is too fast for her, has anyone put their baby on medium flow tommee tippee teats at 3 weeks old?, my partner says we can't put her on them since they say 3-6months and she's only 3 weeks but I thought the age range on teats is just a recommendation, just wondering if anyone has had the same thing happen with their baby and could offer some experience with the situation please. TIA.

I’ve had the exact same problem with my two week old and tommee tippee bottles !! She had dropped weight at her first weigh in too and the midwife asked us which bottles we used and then essentially told us justto try mam ones instead as she said she wasn’t drinking much due to working so hard and exhausting herself . We used tommee tippee with our first baby and never had an issue but since being on the mam bottles she’s been like a totally different baby so much happier and awake and consistently drinking enough . I know it’s a faff after buying so many bottles 🥲 but we just bought a couple to try at first and it was a game changer . I can’t help with teats but it deffo can get better ☺️

I did the exact same but I found her latch on tommee tippee bottles was just too poor. She was dribbling every feed despite size 1 or 2 teats. We swapped to mam bottles with size 2 teats and her latch is incredible she doesn’t dribble and drinks 3-4oz a feed and she’s 3 weeks old too!

We have had the exact same problem with our 3 week old. We are currently using tommee tippee size 2 teats so she will eat enough but she’s coughing and dribbling with that teat and is struggling with wind. I was persevering but I might try MAM bottles if they are better

@Kate thank you for replying, I desperately want the tommee tippee bottles to work for us, just because we bought the glass ones that are £8 a bottle and id hate to have to buy more bottle because we bought 6 bottles😩 I might have to try the different teats before trying another bottle with her, but if I can't get them to work for her I think I'll have to buy a mam bottle and give here a go with it x

@Holly Driscoll thank you for replying, I've heard lots of good things about mam bottles, so if I can't get the tommee tippee bottles to work for her I might have to try her on the mam bottles x

We had the same issue with Tommee tippee bottles! Switched to mam instead x

@Tara I'm going to try new teats, and if they don't work I'm going to give mam bottles a try x

What are the differences in mam teats? My baby is 3 weeks old and uses mam bottles size 0 teats - what’s the difference? When should I move to size 1?

@Lauren thank you for replying. I'm going to give the medium teats a try and see how my baby is with them. It does say on the tommee tippee website that if they cough and dribble with the teat size they may need a slower flow teat x

We swapped from tommee tippee to Mam too. Our little girl had tongue tie and we were advised when we took her to have it snipped that tommee tippee were not recommended at all. They said the teat shape/size is too much for a baby hence the loss of milk/poor suction as the babies are working so hard to try and latch. Our little one is so much better since swapping over we used tommee tippee with our little boy and had no issues so think it also depends on the baby. Good luck x

@Sophie thank you for your reply. We also used tommee tippee with our eldest and had no issues, so this time around we bought the glass tommee tippee bottles and have spent quite a bit on the bottles and teats so far, this is why I'm just trying my hardest to get them to work, but I am wondering whether to just cut my losses and switch to mam, because everyone recommends the mam bottles🤔x

I switched to the Mam bottles last night while still using a medium flow teat (size 2) so she still eats but her latch is a lot better with the Mam bottles. No where near as much coughing and dribbling xx

@Lauren I've upped my little one to size 2 tommee tippee teats today just to give them a try and they seem to be much more effective than the variflow and she hasn't been coughing and spluttering since I've swapped them🤞 I'm very glad to hear the mam bottles have worked for you and your little one x
