Colostrum

Did anyone harvest colostrum prior to an elective C Section? Attended an antenatal class this week in which the midwife said it can induce labour if done prior to week 37. I really want to harvest yet concerned it will onset labour ahead of my C Section date. Any advice please?

I did and it was used in the hospital after birth as we had some trouble with feeding, I started at 37 weeks and my daughter was born at 39+5 basically they said if I went into spontaneous labour and wanted a C-section it would be done as a semi emergency but I can say the harvesting only gave me a few braxton hicks xx

I started harvesting colostrum after 37 weeks and forgot to take to hospital with me 🙈 had my elective section as planned at 38+6

Thank you both! That’s really helpful to know ☺️ Did it take many attempts at harvesting to get any?

I got 1 ml on first attempt and 5ml a few days later but I've been really lucky with supply with both babies. It's extremely common to not get any for a few attempts. Make sure your relaxing and maybe have a warm bath / shower beforehand to massage your boobs

Thank you! Super helpful. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

I did, started at 38 weeks and at the beginning of the week was really frustrated that I’d got nothing after the first try and spent a couple of days stressing but as soon as I relaxed and stopped pressuring myself I managed to get quite a bit. I took 10 syringes with me which we ended up using as my daughter struggled to latch on. We ended up formula feeding but I was told the colostrum would be good to help clear all of her mucus after the section. 😊
