Speech and language

My 2.5 year old is speech delayed and we have been on a waiting list for speech and language for months .. I’ve just had the letter to book the appointment this morning - which is apparently going to be online? Is this the new norm on the NHS? I genuinely can’t believe they expect a 2 year old to engage in this online!!! They’ve told us we need to purchase a bunch of objects for the sessions too? What if parents can’t afford this? Am I better off going private with this, I can’t actually believe they’ve said it’s online! Has anyone had any experience with it?

Have you tried working with the AEA? My daughter is also 2.5 and she has a speech delay. We’ve been working with the AEA since she was 14 months and started private therapy at 18 months. Online therapy sounds like it would be hard. Even with in person therapy she sometimes walks away or goes under the table 😆. Her speech therapist has to bribe her out with a new toy.

Not my specialty, but... I would imagine most of the content is aimed at you, the parent. An hour a week (or whatever length of time) with the speech therapist isn't what's going to move the needle on your daughter's speech progress, it's how well you learn the exercises and how consistently you do them with her throughout the day/week. You just spend way more time with your child. They will need to see her to do some assessments and see how things are progressing, but really quite a bit of their job will be to help you help her. (Which you can do even if she's distracted) I agree in person feels like it makes more sense, but since you've made it this far, give it a chance and if you don't like it, you can confidently pursue a private option. Shop around for off brand tools. You'd probably need them with either option, but "official" ones are overpriced.

Hi Everyone is this for Canada or States. My 2.5 year old is also not talking. Trying to get some information. Thanks

@Manissha - NHS is UK

The NHS model is definitely based on training the parent/caregivers to help the child. Have they already done an assessment? I can’t see how they can help without doing an in person appointment first. If you are struggling to purchase the items suggested, you can contact your HV, they sometimes have access to charities where they can source items or grants.

I had my daughter in speech therapy as it was online, too . Then, I understood the approach. The therapist would sit and watch me interact with my daughter( while she played), and the therapist will guide me on how to support speech by letting my daughter lead the play and I modeling the phrases for her. We will focus on a different thing each session. For example, using prepositions. "The cat in ON the table" or "Oh, now the cat is NEXT to the table, and things like that. She progressed very fast. And there's an order on what y I work on depending on where she is at.The therapist said the idea is to support the parent in how to support vocabulary since it is the parent who spends most of the time with the child. We are in Canada, by the way, but this model is used more often everywhere else with occasional in person sessions.
