Overfeeding

I have a 5 week old who’s EBF (not by choice she won’t take a bottle) who regularly keeps nursing for a long time then projectile vomiting it all up. She’s doing it almost once a day now so I’m hesitant to let her nurse for a long time but it’s hard to tell how much she’s had and when she’s getting to vomit territory. Has anyone else dealt with overfeeding BF babies? I’m not sure if she has reflux as she’s very sicky and sometimes cries while feeding but not all the time

Hi there! Sounds like my first born. She ended up having reflux and was very colicky. We used oval drops but this was 8 yrs ago so I’m not sure if there’s something better. I’d ask the pharmacist though.

Everywhere you read and the advice you get from the health visitor is that you can’t over feed a breastfed baby. Babies that age are a bit sicky and can have reflux but the projectile vomiting sounds a bit abnormal. Maybe go and see the GP? You could speak to the health visitor as well. My baby used to cry while feeding as I had a really fast let down and he couldn’t cope with it. Babies do have to learn to breastfeed, they will take a while to get used to it.

My oldest was like this, the GP gave him baby gaviscon (don't know if that's still a thing 10 years later) but the projectile vomiting stopped once we started using it

Could be your flow is a bit much for babe. Try to feed so you're laying back and the flow isn't going "downhill" You're best engaging in the help from an IBCLC on this one.

I wouldn’t limit it, babies who BF will stop when they’re full. It’s not like formula and it’s easily digested, hence the regular feeds. Burp baby after every feed and keep in an upright position for atleast 15-20mins after feeding. If that doesn’t work, it could be reflux. Speak to your GP, if you’re in the uk they’ll probably prescribe gaviscon or omeprazole. If you’re concerned baby isn’t putting on weight then I’d seek medical attention promptly.

Had the same with my baby born back in June. Spare outfit for me in the baby bag at all times, I still have it now just in case. I went to gp who offered to prescribe gaviscon, which I declined. Personally I didn’t want to give my baby possible side effects. We visited an osteopath to understand the root cause of the reflux and they recommended baby probiotic drops, and over time it’s gotten much less. My baby continued to put on a good amount of weight so I’m confident we made the right decision for us.

My son was like this. He'd vomit after every feed, projectile like every so often, I was told it's most likely posseting although I felt it was too much for that. After trips back and forth to HV at clinics and a visit to the GP, being told as long as the projectile wasn't after every feed and there was no blood in his vomit or nappies, he was doing enough wet & dirty nappies and putting on weight. Someone mentioned cmpa, so I've now minimised my milk intake, sit him up for 30 mins after every feed and burp when switching boob and when he's finished feeding. It has calmed down. It's not after every feed and hasn't projectile vomited for around 4 weeks. I'd agree with above comments, keep a record of when it's worse and check in with HV or GP but look into or mention cmpa to them to see what they think. I know it's a horrible thing, feeling like you've tried everything but nothing helps but you got this and you're doing an amazing job ❤️.

Either u have a fast letdown or ur baby has reflux or allergy. Talk to pediatrician. In meantime, try breastfeeding lying down or in a recline position

You cannot overfeed a baby on the breast. This is not normal so I would ideally talk with a health care professional trained in breastfeeding.
