Daydreaming?

So my son randomly would just zone out for a few seconds we always noticed it but I didn’t even think that was an issue until my mother in law saw it and said I need to take him to his doctor so she can refer us to a specialist we were calling his name and then he snapped out of it he’s done it sitting in his high chair sitting in his tub and one time FaceTimeing his aunt anyone ever experience this I of course started googling and saw it could be silent seizures so now I’m freaking out

I have not experienced that and every experience like that I've been aware of, it was a seizure. I heard they outgrow them. I'd definitely get him evaluated ASAP by a doctor and film it whenever it happens so he can be properly evaluated. I hope everything is ok!

@JL thank you I have an appointment this Thursday now I’m so worried

I don't blame you, I'd be worried, but everything I've ever heard about them is that they're harmless and a phase so I hope it's that way (if it's even that) 🤞

My daughter does this but she also gets very distracted. I think it's just a toddler processing delay

I think your baby might just be processing. I work with kids and in school they teach us the average attention span of an 18-month-old is 30-45 seconds sometimes they’re just observing what’s around them and they have hyperfixation on certain things that they’re attracted to. But you’re his mother and you know what’s best so if you’re genuinely concerned, ask your doctor. Every child is different and they all develop differently and all our kids have different quirks but again you can raise it up at your 18-month appointment.

@Storm thank you so much for sharing with me definitely nice to know that

My pediatrician says it’s them processing and it’s okay to let them have that moment. We weren’t concerned because there are no other signs or symptoms of anything else. Just something apart of their growth.

@Tori thank you for sharing I appreciate that u know sometimes these things make u go down a rabbit hole and make us crazy and worrying so much

Will have you going down a rabbit hole for days lol. Mine use to do it a lot when she was younger and we would just be calling her name. I’m like does she need a hearing test or what? Haha

Our son was doing the same thing and we were referred to a neurologist for an EEG. Our doc suspected absence seizures, which are harmless but can be problematic when kids are school age because they will miss things happening in class.

@Stefanie thank you for sharing with me I’m happy to know if it is that it’s harmless we’re going for his 18 month check up tomorrow so I’ll see what his pediatrician says I’ve been trying to catch it on video when he does it now but of course it rarely has happened now for me to get my phone ready fast enough 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mine does this too, and has since she was pretty little, and yes others have suggested it might be seizures, and of course I went down a rabbit hole of anxiety producing info. However, I also dod this as a kid, I still do this, and I know I’m not having a seizure. My mom and sister both do it too. We do however all have ADHD so that’s what I’m guessing it might be in my daughter’s case. Can you tell if she can still hear you when she’s staring into space? Does she respond to stimuli like if you clap your hands does she blink? If she does then it’s probably not a seizure. Does she do it suddenly like in the middle of doing something like walking or talking and just stop, or is it more when she’s playing by herself or eating and she just starts staring off? Those are the differences that helped me worry less. But probably good to get the opinion of a professional just to be safe.

@Katie thank you so sharing that…..that makes me wonder because idk if I do it but I did have a hard time focusing in school or like following along I’m not as bad as I was when I was a kid but it does tend to happen to me now not sure if that’s similar……so I’ve noticed he does it in the bath tub when he’s playing and then he decides just to sit and chill I notice it happens it happened once when he was on FaceTime with his aunt well her and I were talking and he just had like a blank stare at her and then I called his name and he kinda came back I’ve never paid much attention to it until this Friday he was in his high chair and my mother in law started to feed him and he did it where he was looking in my direction but when I moved from side to side to see if he would follow me he didn’t so he was just staring straight and I was like hello can u hear me and I called his name then he snapped out of it but I can’t recall if he blinked or not

Yeah that definitely sounds like what mine does. My gut tells me it’s not seizures it’s just zoning out because I don’t think you can just snap someone out of a seizure by calling their name. And it makes sense that if two adults were talking he got bored and went somewhere else. Plus you didn’t have the sense something was wrong till your MIL said something. When mine does it I can tell she can hear me it’s just like her eyes are stuck. But that totally happens to me sometimes too where I’m aware of what’s going on and I can hear things my eyes are just stuck for a second. Or other times I go off in my own thoughts and then suddenly snap out of it and realize I’ve been staring into space and wasting the precious little free time I have. Used to happen to me in school too. I’d suddenly come back to earth because the teacher had been repeating my name over and over and I’d be sitting there with the wrong book open. I definitely missed things in class but otherwise it’s harmless.

@Katie yea definitely he’s been doing it so long my husband and I just assumed he was day dreaming my MIL is claiming she saw his eyes roll back but IM 1000% sure that didn’t happen he blinked and I yelled his name and he came to thank you so much for sharing with me it definitely helps put some worries at ease even if it is a seizure it does help to know that even if it is that most cases there harmless I’ll see what happens when I run it by his doctor thank you again for sharing all that info with me I really appreciate it

No problem. And let me know if it is something I should be more concerned about. But I think they’re ok. Just deep in thought.

@Katie no problem I’ll check back in with u tomorrow when we get back from his appointment

@Katie so we took him and ran it by her it’s hard to tell because I didn’t have a video of him doing it but she said it won’t hurt to have him checked out just to be sure it’s nothing so she gave us a referral to take him to a neurologist to have him checked so waiting to see when I can get an appointment now
