Peeing through clothes and painful breast feeds

I’m a FTM to a boy. He is 4 days old. I believe he started cluster feeding so during the day I can feed like three times an hour and so on. I am getting nipple and breast pain when I feed him. It’s feels like an internal pain and it makes it hard to breast feed. Any tips? Also, he keeps peeing through his diaper and clothes. Both my husband and I believe we are pointing his penis down so he doesn’t pee upwards but it must not be working. Does anyone have good tips on that too?

Okay it sounds like your nipples may be raw from cluster feeding. I went thru this as well. A nipple shield will allow you to continue to breastfeed. But you have to keep nipples moisturized. Diaper can be too small… is he in newborn size or size 1? What kind of diapers?

Also since it’s an internal pain, do you feel like your breast are engorged? I recommend you see a licensed lactation consultant to provide hands on help

Get lanolin for your nipples as well as coconut oil. There's also these like metal caps that supposedly help with pain too; never had to use them because mine never latched well. I'd also go to your OBGYN and have them check your breasts for mastitis or a poor latch. I'd also reach out to a lactation consultant so they can check how it goes. As for the constant peeing and getting wet, size up to the next diaper. Could be that he doesn't fit into newborn and a size 1 would fit

My son did the same, have you tried sizing up his nappy ? Worked for us until it didn’t then we would double nap him during the night to save him from getting cold from the pee. Also noticed he would pee more when he was cold so make sure he’s nice and snug (Without making him overheat, it’s such a hard balance but that’s just how it is) With the breastfeeding it’s really not supposed to be painful so wondering if you have lactation specialist available to talk to ? I had horrible time breastfeeding in the start to the point I would bleed and found out my son had a tongue tie! It was pretty severe so I don’t know how I didn’t notice but luckily we were funded to cut it. Your baby might have a latch issue? Hope this helps and know you’re doing so well ! Youre 4 days in and I remember so vividly how nervous I was when mine was that small. Scary times but so worth it, best of luck!!

I switched diaper brands because my little boy was peeing through his. We use Bamboo Nature diapers now since they were the highest rated on Consumer Reports. I haven’t had the breast pain (my milk isn’t really in even at 4 weeks so we combo feed) but would also recommend a lactation consultant.

I’d definitely see the doctor about the nipple and breast pain - it could be thrush causing the internal pain. Does baby have on the right size nappy for his weight?

Silverettes and nipple shields helped me a lot. My son would also pee through his diapers often. I never figured it out, tried every brand going up a size too, nothing worked. Positive side is he was fully potty trained, even through the night by 2 1/2 - he hated being wet.

For diapers, I think sizing up will help. And make sure to point his penis down. Cluster feeding is very Tiring, but if you push through it I promise it’ll get better. I would recommend booking an appointment with an LC. For nipple pain, use nipple cream. And check if he has a proper latch. There are tons of videos on YouTube for help until you get an appointment with an LC. If you are not exclusively breast feeding, you can give a bottle to Him and get some rest. A mistake I was making in my initial days is that I was squeezing too close to my areolae to express milk. That led to breast pain. Later I learned that squeezing towards the base of the breast is better. Also squeezing close to the areolas unlatches the baby.

There’s lots of different things that could be going on (vasospasm, positioning, tongue tie), etc., so I would recommend that you seek help from a lactation consultant as soon as you can. Breastfeeding *shouldn’t* hurt (although it often does) and if your babe has a tongue tie or a shallow latch, it’s better to get these things sorted earlier rather than later. Midwives, health visitors and GPs are not really qualified to assess these things, so you wanna find someone who is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a specialist tongue tie practitioner (ATP). As for the nappies… yeah, that’s boys for you. Make sure you’re using the right size nappy. Experiment with a couple of different brands. Make sure you’re opening up the nappy fully before putting it on and fluffing out the leg guards every time you change him. And as you put the nappy on, check that his peepee is pointing down, close up one side, then check again before closing up the other side.

I had the sore nipples with cluster feeding. By the time I ordered shields and they arrived (maybe around two weeks mark) him n I were getting on better with it all and it honestly wast that sore anymore so I never bothered using them, you should be ok if you’re anything like me and can just wait it out, it gets easier :) Take the very wet nappies as a sign he is getting enough milk :) I suggest Kit and Kin ones if u can get some to try even they hold loads, but g we have went 10hours overnight without a change and no leaks

Oh and unused No Harm Nipple Balm too actually it was good
