C section

Whilst I am high risk, my consultant confirmed that I don’t need to be induced early. Does anyone know if I can request a c section the week I am due if baby doesn’t come naturally by 40 weeks or do I have to wait until 40+7?

Yes you can, they book elective c-sections from 39 weeks. With my first they wanted to induce at 39wks but I declined and said I prefer to go into spontaneous labour and if that doesn’t happen then I’d like a section on my due date.

I think it depends on hospital as at ours you can elect for a section but they book them in from 40 weeks … not 39 x

You can ask to book a c section whenever you want to 😊 a plan will be made with you for the best and safest time for you and baby to do it

It depends on availability at your hospital too I think. I’m 37+1 and have GD so they said I might have to be induced if my blood sugar doesn’t come down in 1 week. I wanted to avoid induction at all cost so I asked for an electove c-section if it doesnmt come naturally by week 39, and they had no availability already and had to send a few emails to request to squeeze me in somewhere. I recommend talking to your midwife asap and making it clear you want a c-section so they can put the request in early.

Thank you so much. That’s reassuring to know! I know you can choose to have one from 39 but didn’t know if I could wait for spontaneous labour first for a bit and push it out to 40 weeks! As I no longer have any more consultant midwife appointments and my community midwife (out of catchment) is useless any idea who I would talk to in order to get it facilitated? X

I would phone the hospital you will be birthing at and speak to the antenatal clinic there. Explain that your midwife is out of catchment and that you’ve decided you want a c-section. They’ll give you the right advice and get a consultant to see/call you. Explain that you want a c-section on your due date if possible and give them your reasoning. Say you aren’t against spontaneous labour before 40 weeks but for your wellbeing c-section is what you prefer.

Little update and pretty disappointing. I spoke to my consultant via a medical secretary and they said I’ve opted for a vaginal delivery and to stick to that until my 39 week apt where I can discuss having a section. I feel like the chances of having a section the following week at 40 weeks is slim given it needs to be booked in advance. Feeling pretty stressed and feeling like my freedom of choice has been taken away!
