You don’t pump to get colostrum, you use a syringe. Not til at least 36 weeks. And don’t put any pressure on yourself - it’s only recently become a “thing”, lots of women can’t get anything and still go on to have a wonderful breastfeeding experience.
@Julia okay , will do thank you !!
@Fay appreciate the advice!
my OB recommended i don’t collect colostrum before the baby was born, i can’t remember the reasoning behind it but it wasn’t a “necessity”
@Stephany I’ll definitely ask my doctor before doing it then ! Thanks
38 as collecting can bring on labour
It’s not something you need to do. I personally never and have had no issues breastfeeding. Still EBF at almost 8 months
i pumped to get my colostrum at 36 weeks i was getting about 2-4oz
It's not something you HAVE to do, but you can if you would like baby to still be able to have it if for some reason they can't get it directly from the source. If you don't and something happens, they will still be fed, so it's not essential. I kinda wish I had done it (assuming I could get it out) because my boy wouldn't latch for a couple of days after the very first feed, and at that point I couldn't keep up with the expressing, so we gave him formula. He's fine and now I'm EBF, so as I said, not a necessity, but it can be useful. Just don't stress if you can't get it out, which is the reason why I didn't want to try at all.
The nurses guided me through it after delivery and my baby was fine and I was able to produce enough to feed her before my milk came in
I did at 36 weeks as my midwife recommended. Wouldn’t start earlier than that as it can trigger labour
