Bottle refusal

Baby girl is 8 weeks old and she’s recently started refusing to latch to the bottle like she use to. After about an ounce of milk she’s pushing the teat out and won’t take no more. In the last 12-14 hours, she’s only taken about 6 ounces of milk? She’s a little unsettled but nothing major - she took an ounce and has gone to sleep in my lap? I’m so confused Help?

As a temporary fix you could try feeding her from a shot glass? That’s what the midwife’s did with my boy when he wouldn’t eat when he was first born xx

@Evie what would I do just pour into her mouth? X

@Aimee yes just gently tilt it back until she gets some in her mouth xx

@Evie thank you, I will try this x

Have you tried the next teat size up? Sounds like she might be getting bored / frustrated xx

@Chloe Boulter so, I haven’t - she’s using teat size 1 at the moment and she still leaks it out of her mouth so I didn’t think she needed it? But I think I will try xx

@Aimee ah probably not then if she is 8 weeks and size 1! I’ve only just moved my 8 week old onto size 1 so probably not that, just a thought xx

Have you checked little ones tongue? Is it white? My lo was like this and had oral thrush

@Chloe Boulter but she has been on size 1 for a while now, she was falling asleep on 0 very early on so I went straight onto size 1 so it could be? X

@Abbie no I haven’t, I will have a look x

@Aimee worth a try, won’t hurt ☺️

I think someone said it already but defo give the next teat size a try because I had that issue with mine, started sticking her tongue out and not taking her bottle and moved to a faster teat and that seems to have solved it

@Nicole thank you! I’m literally doing a bottle for her now with the next teat so fingers crossed xx

@Aimee you say the milk is leaking from her mouth. Has she had tongue checked for ties? This was a symptom of my girls that went unnoticed for 7 weeks x

I’m having the same problem! My son is 9 weeks old

@Joanna she hasn’t but I haven’t found any issues with her feeding until now? So maybe something to look for? She seems very active with her tongue though and sticks it out etc I don’t know if a tongue tie would restrict this? X

@Helena so I’ve just changed her to a size 2 teat and she’s taken her bottle, not sure if she was just hungry or whether she’s found it better to feed - will see on her next feed x

@Aimee it was just one of the things the health visitor looked at when I said she was refusing feeds. She ended up having CMPA and reflux as well as tongue tie tho anyway🤣my girl used to make a clicking sound when feeding too because of tongue tie and it meant she took in a lot of air when feeding so filled her belly with wind before she’d had more than 2oz and then she would be sick and refuse the rest. But if you’ve not no other feeding issues and she seems comfortable during/after then it’s probably not that x

@Aimee ok thanks! Will try that. He sometimes takes it but not every time. Not sure what the issue is X

@Joanna so I’m still waiting to be seen by the health visitor and I have no contact for them, I’m so angry about it because I’ve had so many questions. We had a bit of wind and hard stools so I took her off cows milk just incase - and she started having more regular stools and been fine for 2 weeks on goats milk until now 🫠🫠 xx

@Aimee thats ridiculous!! we changed my girl to Pepti for CMPA and she got better, then 2 weeks later symptoms reappeared and so we had to change again to Neocate, but she was even worse on that. It’s a horrendous battle. Might be worth speaking to GP if health visitor is no use x
