Please let this be just a weird phase…

Ok so my son is 3… we just got a puppy about a month ago, his name is Bear. He’s such an amazing puppy, listens very well and has been a GREAT addition to our family of 7, 8 including the pup. Just recently my 3 year old has been on this “I’m Bear” kick pretending to be the puppy. When he starts acting out, he’s been going through his terrible 3’s since baby brother was born back in March, he starts screaming and gets very angry. We’ve been working on it. But when we say “Bear stop it” he completely stops his tantrum and listens to what we tell him as long as we call him Bear. For ex. If he asks for Candy and I tell him not right now, after dinner. He’ll freak out and start crying because I said not right now, but if I say “Bear I said later” he’ll take a deep breath and start smiling and panting like a dog & then he’ll go play. Completely cutting out the tantrum… it’s sooooo weird… almost like he’s hypnotized by calling him Bear.. it’s the weirdest thing & I don’t like it. Has anyone else experienced this with their toddler. I know toddlers go through their weird phases but… I’ve never dealt with something like this before.

My 3 year old has been a 'catty' for a week. Won't do as he's told unless we say catty instead of his name. Everything is crawling and meowing. Playing with the cats toys etc

lol i get the mimicking but ugh I hate it hahaha. I don’t want him to depend on calling him Bear to listen. He went as far as pooping in the backyard!! Like the dog… 😭😭😭

My three year old has been obsessed with an older kid at her daycare- pretending to be him and if we address her as his name she will follow our instructions no problem, but not if we call her by her own name. Very weird- also here waiting for this phase to be over!

It's just a phase having a new baby is a big change and he may feel like he isn't going to get the same amount of love and attention he already has

I was a dog for a week or two as a toddler after I saw 101 Dalmations 🤣 I don't think this is super abnormal behavior.

My 3 year old does this with "Puppy" and occasionally with "Meow" (our cats name).. it was super intense in the beginning but it's wore off after a while and it's only occasionally now. I think it's just a phase when they start getting an imagination. I wouldn't stress it.

My niece was a dog for a good two years because she was obsessed with paw patrol. Wish I was playing 😂

My son pooped in the garden cause he was copying the dog once 😂 he also drank out the dog bowl a couple of times 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

My kids have tried both dog and cat food

I am sorry but this actually made me laugh. Definitely a story to tell him when he's older 🤣 you should record him for memories sake 🤣

I don’t have advise but one of my dogs name is bear lol it wa any daughters third word

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's developmentally normal. My daughter pretended to be a dog. She'd actually growl and bark at strangers 🤦‍♀️ I knew it was a phase, but took her a minute to grow out of it. She's a teen now and does/acts like a normal teen.

You know what😂😂😂😂🤦🏽‍♀️ when I was a kid, I went through this cat phase. I don’t remember if you had to refer to me by a specific name or anything however I do remember I wouldn’t talk, I would only meow lol. My sister is 3/4 yrs older than me and I only remember this now reading this post because of how annoyed my sister was with me! People would ask me a question and my reply was “meow”. My sister would go crazy, demand I stop and try and make my mum get me to stop but she had to explain to her she had no control over it and I wouldn’t listen even if she asked 😆. I don’t remember why I did it, or how old I was, but I do know it was something my mum just had to let pass and I eventually got it out of my system (not sure how long it took though)🥴

My little sister pretended she was a hamster for a good year at least. She swore she was her hamsters mom. She was like 3 or maybe 4. She would nibble on her food like fricken rodent IN public 🤣. When we fought she would get on her back and do this kicking and clawing. She was also a bitter. It was so fricken weird 🤣 she did outgrow it though. She can barely remember that but my older sister and I die laughing!!

Apparently I went through a phase of being a horse when I was 3. Hopefully it will pass soon.

My daughter will totally listen if I address her as “kitty” and meow at her lol toddlers are very weird

I know there’s a whole craze today about this furies thing or whatever it is but I can assure you, little children imitating animals has happened forever and completely normal! Your child should grow out of it :) x

This sounds reasonably normal to me, sounds like by calling him bear you’re redirecting to a game he likes. My 3 year old often refuses to brush his teeth and throws a fit but if I say I’m the dentist and it’s time for a check up then it’s a fun game!? 3 year olds are just kind of crazy I think

We’ve got a similar situation with our 2.5yr old. He’s very cheeky and won’t listen most of the time unless my husband becomes the character ‘baby witch’… he has to wear a witch hat, ride an umbrella like a broom and use a ridiculous squeaky voice but our toddler will follow ‘baby witches’ instructions no question 😂 For me I have to be ‘the old lady’ and the umbrella becomes a walking stick and a similar voice is needed but hey ho, it works 😂

Thank you everyone! I love reading everyone’s similar situations 🫶🏼 Looks like their imagination is at play, & makes me think of it a whole different way!

@Katie my older sister convinced me to graze on the grass so I could be a horse when I was around the same ago 🫠🤣
