For those who have frozen breastmilk, did you have a problem with high lipase?

Yes with both babies and it’s absolutely disgusting lol it’s like drinking vanilla dish soap 😂

I’ve heard scalding the milk before freezing lowers the lipase. AI says to scald the milk until it reaches 180F then cool and freeze.

I do but I just mix fresh with frozen and my son drinks it just fine. After 6 months old you can also add alcohol free vanilla to it. But so far I haven’t needed to.

Yes I had an oversupply and pumped two freezers packed to the BRIM and it all went to waste. Scalding didn’t work and neither did adding alcohol free vanilla. Wasted my time and sanity 💔 I donated 3/4ths to moms in need who’s babies would take it and I just use the rest for soap and milk baths😭

Baby never took it :(

I had high lipase, but my baby didn’t mind

I don’t even know what this is but gonna look it up now!

Interesting! Never heard of this! Breastfed my other 3 babies and now having my 4th next spring so I don’t think this was ever an issue in my frozen milk. Never noticed it anyway

Unfortunately yes, worked so hard to build a freezer stash & couldn’t use any of it because it was gross and my son wouldn’t go near it, understandably

Yes 😅 BUT if you add a couple drops of alcohol free vanilla the baby is more likely to take it (or mix fresh with the frozen)

Maybe that’s what happened to my milk! We assumed the freezer malfunctioned but even milk from may & June smelled and tasted horrible when we tried it in September. She usually takes my frozen popsicle milk so we just assumed it was the freezer.

Mixed! Some of mine have been high lipase and some haven’t. Baby is fine with either though!

@Monét my super early milk doesn’t, but I did change my diet after July/august. I’ve spoken to my midwife about it who’s said it should be because of my diet change, anything from mid August to now has high lipase.

What’s crazy is, after reading this post, I got to thinking, “what would I have done if my kids had to go to daycare? Squeeze myself dry like I’m a cow making milk for Walmart??”

You can scald milk high in lipase too before freezing to take the taste off

@Francheska yeah I deleted my comment cause it made no sense 😂

Omg I can’t believe how common it is I have over 800mls frozen in the freezer for a rainy day and I really hope it’s ok to use! I am so mad that we have to face this as if breastfeeding or producing milk isn’t hard enough 🤣😭

Yes, but it was still fine! The milk is still good and both babies still took it. If your baby doesn’t like it, you could try mixing with some fresh milk

I did with my first but she didn’t mind, I haven’t had to dip into my freezer stash this time around though and my freezer is already full so I should probably check that out soon 🥲

I’ve only ever done one frozen feed and my baby didn’t mind so hopefully it stays that way!

Dang idk I donated all mine. Hopefully it was good 😦

@Dory if it’s any consolation, most preemie babies don’t mind it at all! it’s the term ones and the ones who’ve had fresh already that do

@Francheska what diet changes helps to lower lipase?

@Gabby idk if it’s always diet. My milk only became high lipase once it was frozen! When it’s fresh it’s sweet.

@Gabby no diet sadly, it's just one of those things 😑

I was gutted to find out I had high lipase I had over 100oz in my freezer 😭 so it's now all relegated to milk baths and rashes ect as she won't take it. Don't blame her made me gag and gave me a headache was rank!! Poor baby, I had been trying to feed it to her for ages before I actually tried some

@Shanice I’ll be making my partner try it I haven’t even tasted fresh breastmilk but he’s ready to try anything I’ve even witnessed him suck vomit off the babies face he is a next level dad 🤣🤣🤣

@Shanice I feel your pain! I’ve got over 1400oz my daughter won’t drink😭
