Nursing trouble

My baby is only three days old, so I know I’m brand new to this, but nursing is really difficult. If my baby is sleeping, she cries when I wake her up to eat and she won’t nurse while crying, but if I put her on my chest and hold her to calm her down, she starts to doze off again and she won’t eat then either. I’m terrified she’s not eating enough, and earlier I spent almost an HOUR trying to get her to get a good latch and nurse long enough. Is this normal?

has your milk come in, and have you tried dream feeding? its where you basically try latching baby while she's asleep, typically made easier if your milk has come in already. what does her weight/loss look like? also, her little stomach is sooo tiny right now. she may not need to eat long as long as she is eating frequently.

thelactationmentor on Instagram will help if you can't get in touch with a lactation consultant.

I was in the same situation (I praying yours gets better and you’re not left pumping as your outcome.) i learned that you don’t have to wake your child to feed through the night. let her sleep just make sure she’s eating enough durning the day. as fast as my milk supply , i felt like it didn’t fully come until 8–10 weeks or after I got on BC. she just didn’t seem to get full so i solved that issue by pumping

Nursing is hard :( specially in the first few days. Your body is learning to make milk and baby is also learning to feed. My baby used to do doze off with a couple of mins too and unlatch. If you make her a bit comfortable they tend to stay awake longer - like Undress him and keep him in his diapers or You can keep a wet burp cloth and then rub it on his hands to wake him up (I had to do both). In the initial days (and weeks) it’s normal to spend hours nursing! I spent 3 hours nursing, he would feed for a bit, then sleep for like 20mins, then feed a bit again, and so on. If you are worried, after a feed you can give her a little 10-20ml top up of formula or pumped milk in a bottle. A 3 day old baby doesn’t need that much milk either, but they tend to feed often as well. Sometimes you might feed her for and hour and 5 mins later they’ll want more 😅😅 I’d strongly advise you to set up an appointment with a lactation consultant. Hang in there momma, you are doing a good job ❤️

It’s so hard! I pumped for two weeks before my milk came in and fed my baby formula while I did that. She feeds wonderfully now and there is no issue. It’s a big commitment to wake up, fed bottle, put baby back to sleep, pump, wash parts then get sleep yourself. It’s hard but it gets easier!

If she's not getting consistent latch then she won't take in enough milk. You may want to look into milk share programs in your area to supplement with milk. My son had a poor latch for the first 2 to three .... Months .... And if it wasn't for supplementing ( granted formula was pushed on us) .... He wouldn't have gained much weight at all .... He's now almost 17 months.... And we still nurse ☺️🥰

I have an appointment for a lactation consult tomorrow at the hospital I gave birth at. And our pediatrician gave us formula to help her gain weight until my pump gets here. I’m just hoping that we get it soon, I definitely don’t want her to be on formula when my milk is here (it has definitely come in, as I had drips coming out yesterday).

Nursing is tough, but you’re doing a great job. I definitely agree with the comments, try dream feeding! Best of luck mama 🖤

Have you tried to hand express or use a Hakaa (spelling questionable). That’s what I did before introducing my pump about 1 month pp.

Happy to talk more in DMs or even have a phone chat if you want!!

I do try hand expressing when she’s nursing, but not much comes out.

And I did try dream feeding today with formula and she was drinking it.

You probably still have colostrum only. My milk came in on day 4… you’ll know when it does. My breasts were sooooo engorged and sore. Just try to let baby latch whenever you can. Cluster feeding helps the baby get more colostrum AND helps your body know to produce milk. You’ve got this 🖤

It’s definitely milk, it’s white when it leaks out.

Colostrum can be white! It can be white, creamy, yellow, or even clear!

My lactation consultant gave me a hand pump and told me to supplement with formula so at least she will still get breast milk.
