Giving up pumping/breasfeeding

Hi ladies. I’ve woken up this morning again with mastitis. My daughter is 9 weeks old and I have mainly been exclusively pumping the breastmilk for her, with the odd formula when I haven’t produced enough (I’m a just about supplier). I told myself that if I got mastitis again I would be stopping my journey with the breastmilk and converting to formula only. I was so unwell the last time and now feeling rubbish I do not want to get it again. Can anyone offer advice of how they have stopped or switched, and how you got your supply to slow down/stop without getting sore or an infection? I do have a phone call withy GP today, but was looking for some first hand advice from my fellow mummas. Thanks in advance ❤️

Same happened with me! Kept getting thrush in my nipple, cracked and sore then got mastitis! Gave up at 9 weeks too, my son is 10 weeks now and thriving on formula, it makes no difference to him so don’t feel guilty! I just slowly stopped pumping. The breast feeding support woman put so much fear into me that if I didn’t pump I would get mastitis again but honestly my milk supply just dried up really quick! as long as you pump at least once at night then a few times in the day then dwindle that down you should be fine ❤️ x

Thank you. That’s what I was thinking. How long did you pump for each session and how long did you decrease down for x

@Jessica I just did 10 mins, normally when I was pumping to feed I’d do 15-20. I decided I wanted to stop on the Monday and by Friday I didn’t need to pump anymore! he still gets a little bit at night so would probably take a few more days to completely dry up your supply x

Drop 1 feed every week if you can. If not every 3-4 days. I’ve had mastitis and breast abscess that landed me in the hospital for 5 days. It sucks and is horrible. But this is how I’ve stopped breast milk production before and it works. GLx
