Yes! As long as both of you are happy to nurse there's no reason to stop! It's recommended to go to at least two and longer if it's still mutually beneficial. The switch is mainly because of formula. Whole milk has more fat and our children need fat in their diets so it's an easy way to get fat and protein. And I bet you're offering things like cheese and yogurt throughout the day/week which also helps them hit calcium needs as they naturally decrease nursing as they age.
Yes! Keep feeding breastmilk as long as you can! It's way better for baby. I'm not sure who says to switch at 1 year, I just know they say that's when you can switch. The WHO recommends 2 years and the AAP says as long as you and baby want.
It's not a case of you need/have to switch at 1. It's a case of that's the age it is suitable for them to have it as a drink because before that the main source of nutrition is breastmilk or formula and if they were drinking cows milk it would mean they wanted less of that. Whereas after 1 food is the main source and breastmilk or formula is extra. I'm still breastfeeding at 2 and my daughter didn't like drinking cows milk at 1 but got calcium elsewhere so I wasn't worried. Now she likes a drink of milk. They have also changed the recommendations from whole milk to semi skimmed.
I was confused about this too! I just kept breastfeeding on demand like I always had, my boy is 2 and we’re still going. I never introduced cows milk as a drink to him. Occasionally he’d sip some from a glass but he didn’t care for it. I put cows milk on his cereal and he eats yoghurt so he does get dairy goodness. I think the cows milk as a drink is if you’re planning to actually wean off breastmilk/ formula. But WHO recommends breastfeeding for a minimum of two years so if you’re happy to keep going then definitely do xx It’ll only do your kiddo good!
