Naps

Hello, my baby used to sleep until 6:30-7:30am and has 2 naps of around 2h in total. This week he has been fighting his first nap, I managed to put him to sleep but with some crying or complaining first. He has also been waking up at 5am in the morning. Can it be a sleep regression or maybe it is time to drop a nap? I feel is early to only have one nap but honestly I’m exhausted of waking up at 5am everyday 😞

How old is your baby? It could be a sleep regression. We're currently going through the 10 months one. The first one ever. So it's hit us hard. Not enough day naps and waking up through the night

He is also 10 months. If this is a sleep regression it would be the first one for us too. Honestly we are so desperate… Hopefully it doesn’t last long 🤞🏻 ❤️ xxx

Yeah, you're definitely going through one. Just be patient. Nothing to do about it unfortunately. I know, it's frustrating but it will pass eventually. Just try and get some sleep if he manages to have a day nap. They still need 2 naps a day.

Even 30 min will help you big time

Typical age range to drop to one nap is 14-18 months but what you are describing is signs that your LO may be ready - early morning wakes and fighting the nap. It could be a regression or he could be ready to drop a nap. What is his first wake window? He might just need a bit more awake time to be tired enough to nap.

@Neha his first wake window is of 3-3.5h. I am so confused, probably is a sleep regression but he’s not waking up in the night, he sleeps through but wakes up very early… At the same time I don’t know if he’s ready to only have one nap because I feel it is a lot time being awake for him. I don’t know what to think or do 🤦🏻‍♀️

Obviously, every baby is different, but have you tried to extend the first WW? My LO is on 3.75/3.75/3.15-3.30. He’s 10 months soon so a similar age to your LO. We cap day naps at 2h total, and he does around 11 hours overnight, unless we have a wonky nap day, in which case he might sleep longer at night. But in a 24 hour period, he’s awake for around 11 hours in total, 13 hours sleep (2hr nap and 11 hours overnight on a good day). What time does your LO go to sleep?

@Neha my baby goes to sleep at 6:45/7pm and used to sleep till 6:30/7:30am, he was sleeping around 12/12.5 hours in the night. He used to have his first nap at 10/10:30am of 30min and then the second nap at 2/2:30pm of 1h normally (some days less and some days a bit more). So in total around 13.5h of sleep. He has always been an amazing sleeper honestly, I didn’t expect this at 10 months 😩 Today I tried longer wake windows, as he woke up at 5 am I managed to do almost 4h wake windows. He didn’t fight his first nap so I think he needed longer wake windows. Hopefully tomorrow he wakes up at his normal time. Thank you so so much xxx

Fingers crossed for you! Apparently they have a ‘sleep tank’, so once they’ve had as much sleep as they need in a 24 hour period, they wake up. It sounds like he might just need a bit more awake time in the day, and possibly a slightly later bed time to get him to sleep in a bit later in the morning. The other tip to try and get out of the early wake cycle is to keep him in the dark for as long as you can until the desired wake time. Exposure to light impacts the circadian rhythm, and the first wake window apparently starts when they are exposed to light as opposed to when they wake up. Hope that helps!
