Work absense

Looking for some advice, last month I had reduced movement, I ended up going to hospital and being seen at around 10pm, I was monitored for nearly 2 hours and then sent home, I got home just after midnight. Of course at that point I felt quite worried and struggled to sleep, probably fell asleep at around 1/1:30am. We had my partners child over to sleep that night, he is only a toddler so was up and awake at 5am (as was I due to partner going to work early) I felt absolutely exhausted but still went to work as there was bits I need to do. At around 11:30 I said I had to go home as I was so tired, headache from lack of sleep etc. I just got my payslip and this has been marked as ‘other’ leave, therefore I have lost £60 (not a lot but it is when your due a baby in less than a month). I guess my question is, can lack of sleep be classed as sickness?

Yes - it’s not pre-authorised annual leave. Not to come across rude just curious what did you think it would be classed as? Xx

In the uk you shouldn’t be penalised for any pregnancy related sickness/illness x

@Amy I thought it would be classed as ‘sickness’ which I get paid for. However it’s been marked as ‘other’ absence x

I would have assumed it would go down as sickness. Definitely speak to your employer about it!

Bit of a grey area I would say because being tired isn’t really sickness, even though the circumstances are more than you just being tired. I’d just query it in a ‘what’s this other leave?’ Type way. See what they say and then argue the toss regarding it being sickness. X

You had reduced movement and were very anxious - which caused you to have a sore had and exhausted - this is due to being pregnant - your work should have took common sense approach and realised anxiety is a sickness. My work n don’t need to pay me for sickness but they did when I was off for 3 days . They can also start ur mat leave early if it continued. You think they would have a heart with a one off x

I’ve never been penalised for pregnancy related sickness. You did well to come in, I would just ask about it and say you only come in to do these things as they needed to be done if it wasn’t for that you would have had the day off to rest as you’ve been in hospital with concerns for the baby

Oh apologies, I think I misunderstood! Yes I would agree it should be classed as sickness x

I was off with pelvic girdle pain and that was included in my sickness score. Checked the policy and it states that it pregnancy related illness would always be counted as sickness leave but would never go to final stage as it is pregnancy related x
