Toddler sleep is BAD

I am so exhausted writing this and my toddler is currently awake next to me with no sleep in sight at 1:30am. His sleep used to be pretty good up until a month or 2 ago. If he took an afternoon nap, he was up til 10:30 pm so we started doing no naps or short naps but then it was 6pm bedtimes with middle of the night 3am wake ups. It’s been honestly so over the place and no matter how hard I try to get him on a schedule it just isn’t working. This week he’s sick so I’ve been trying to make sure he gets the rest he needs but he fell asleep tonight at 5pm so I figured he would be down for the night. Nope, he slept til 8:30pm so basically took a 3 hour nap and now he’s been awake since them. I’m literally crying and I don’t know what to do. Anyone have advice? In the same boat??

Just here for solidarity. My girl used to sleep a solid 12 hours a night straight with a 2-3 hour nap and she went down for both SO easy. Then about a month and a half ago or so she got sick and the first night she woke up and 🤮 all over her bed. So she stayed up and snuggled with me watching Disney movies til her sheets were clean and I was sure she wasn’t gonna throw up more. Then every night after that just started getting worse and worse with her staying up til 1 or 2am or being up for 5 hours in the middle of the night or both. 🙃😩 it’s slowly getting better but no real end in site. She still wakes up around 3-4am every night and I just being her to my bed at that point cause I need sleep (I’m a single mom who also has a 5 month old).

Tonight I got her to bed at 10:45 then she woke up just from me trying to sneak out the door and it creaked then I didn’t get her back down til 12:05. It’s even harder cause she’s in a toddler floor bed so I can’t just confine her to a crib anymore. Now when she wakes up she goes and turns on the lamp in her room then cries and knocks on her bedroom door til I come.

Have you checked your toddlers ears for a infection my son did the same thing and had a ear infection

Usually when a toddler is sick they will wake up in the middle of the night the pediatrician recommended some ibuprofen for pain but I noticed his sleep pattern changed after the first day. I would recommend a bath before bed and some chamomile tea for sleep. If you want to Try ibuprofen for pain that’s a recommendation aswell.

I would recommend the car nap if he falls asleep in the car and don't let him sleep past 2pm. I don't know his sleep needs per 24 hours or his usual wake windows but my kiddo had a minimum 7 hour wake window before bed at this age 😳 so even if I woke her from a nap at 2 she would go to bed at 9. But that was manageable for us and she would sleep til 7. I'd just work hard to get the nap in early.

@Gabriela I’m sorry you’re going through all this while being a single mom and having another baby! He sleeps in bed with us and has coslept because he would literally scream in his crib until he would be close to passing out and it just wasn’t worth that. That being said, he’s always been like super easy to put down and was sleeping like 9-7 consistently for months! He finally fell asleep at 2:30am and is currently still asleep, it’s just an awful pattern ugh

@Dajia I have not but that’s a good idea. He’s just had a cold and been super stuffy so he wants to sleep like sitting up on my chest

@Ella thank you! I feel like that may be where we’re headed when I can finally get him back to somewhat of a normal schedule! He has the same like he needs anywhere from 6-7 hours between wake windows! A couple months ago we were doing like 9-10 pm bedtimes and that was working fine for us! He would sleep in and take a good nap and it was consistent. I don’t even know what happened to turn his sleep all upside down and now it just feels like a never ending crap fest

@Sarah as they get older their sleep needs decrease. So let's say he was sleeping 12 hours per 24 (11 at night, 1 hour nap or whatever) it may well have decreased to 11 hours per 24. So you have to cut an hour out of the overall schedule. I remember both my kids sleep needs reduced at this age. So maybe try cutting the nap shorter if that's possible.
