Anybody’s baby go long periods without pooping?

My LO is 4 months and does not poop regularly. She goes 1-2 weeks without pooping. Appears to be constipated but when she poops it’s watery. We have an appointment with GI but they’re booking out a few months. Has anyone else dealt with this? We have tried the usual remedies: warm bath, belly massage, bicycles, water, gas drops, pear juice, prune purées. It’s getting to the point where only a suppository helps.

Please call your insurance and ask for a different GI provider as the current one does not have sooner availability.

Formula or bf?

I would also try to look for a sooner appointment or even try urgent care and make sure everything is ok… I know some babies go a few days without but not weeks

@Katherine breastfed exclusively

@Jessica we have been to the ER and talking to ped regularly. They said everything looks normal without further testing. They recommended cutting out dairy from diet since I am breastfeeding and that didn’t seem to make a difference

Is she actually constipated? Could she just be gassy? It's common for bf babies to poop less, some only poop every other week (according to my ped and confirmed by my lactation consultant) and it can be rather inconsistent because you milk and the amount she drinks can be inconsistent.

@Katherine so is there anything that you know they recommend to do in those instances?

I’m sorry you’ve had no satisfying answers. My nephew had a dairy allergy and my sister had to wait about 14 days to notice any changes after taking it out of her diet

Thank you :( it’s been 3 weeks since I’ve cut dairy out and don’t see any improvement so far

Nothing to do because there is nothing actually wrong. Breast milk can be almost completely digested by a baby so there is no poop (waste) to eliminate. It's actually a mark of a healthy baby. Who raised alarm bells on this? You or pediatrician?

Read...after 6 weeks-- https://llli.org/breastfeeding-info/constipation/#:~:text=It%20is%20not%20unusual%20for,ml)%20onto%20a%20dry%20diaper.

I had this issue with my girl who just turned 4 months. My ped said exclusively breastfed babies digest milk very quick so it’s normal for them not to poop for a week or so. My girl seemed very irritated/constipated though so I was given the ok to give her 2 oz (max) a day of prune or apple juice as needed.

@Katherine I messaged my ped about it when she went 15 days without pooping and ped said it was ok as long as she wasn’t in discomfort but it got uncomfortable and ped at ER said it’s not normal to go that long. Also, why when she was given suppository then did she have a massive poop?

@Julia my girl is 4 months also! Was this the first time it happened to your daughter? Did the juice work and if so how many days did you have to give it to her? The juice didn’t work with my little one, maybe I didn’t give her enough?

First time I’ve noticeably seen her act upset from constipation! I didn’t end up needing the juice, she pooped a few times literally the second I was about to give it to her. Hope your little one feels better. My friend told me juice didn’t work for her son, only puree prunes but the ped didn’t give me the ok to give her that which is why I never tried
