Loft room for baby…

We’re looking at houses and one we love would mean our 1 year old being in a loft conversion. Stair safety aside - as we have plans for this - are there any other issues with having a small child in a loft conversion? I’ve read they can get quite hot in summer but those posts were in the US and were in Greater London, England.. Any experience?

My bedroom was in the loft in my old house. I'm in the UK, and it did get incredibly hot during the summer. Some nights, I actually had to sleep on the sofa. We did get a lot of sun on the back of the house, though. I can't comment on all loft conversions, but that was my experience x

We did a loft conversion before we had our little boy and he has been in there for a few months now. We are actually in the process of selling our house and buying a new one (hopefully moving in January) and one of the main reasons I’m so pleased about moving is the loft bedroom! I love it but I hate not being on the same floor as my little boy. It does get really hot in there, and quite chilly in winter too despite being very well insulated - of course heating helps but it’s hard to balance it getting overly hot. He’s only 17 months at the moment so it’s not an issue, but I hated the thought of him having to come downstairs in the night if he needed us. I also worry about fires or other emergencies, I feel it would be easier to get us all out if needed if we were all on the same floor xx

@Beth that’s interesting!! I would’ve assumed it would be warm in the winter with heat rising etc! I was quite pleased at the thought cause my boys room where we are is quite cold. We’re actually on one floor atm with our boy directly between kitchen and bathroom so the prospect on him not being bothered by toilet flushes and washing dishes was also feeling pretty amazing! Peaks and troughs I guess

Our loft conversion is really hot in summer, and really cold in winter. It's our third bedroom so if we have a 2nd child they will be sharing a bedroom downstairs. And we'll keep the loft bedroom as a guest room/storage room/play room and then move house when we feel we want the kids to have their own rooms

@Charley I find it interesting they get so cold! Presumably they’re insulated to be fine to live in?

We actually put more insulation in then the regulations stated in hopes it would save on bills but nope! It’s freezing without heat on high 😬 the main benefit is definitely how quiet it is for them, we can be stacking the dishwasher/having a shower etc and he wouldn’t have a clue. But I definitely am looking forward to us all being on the same floor when we move x

@Beth this is so helpful thank you! Considering you have a little one in there I don’t suppose you know what sort of temp it goes down to (from his monitor)? Or I guess you have your radiators on? Just cause our boys room gets freezing already! Wondering if it’s comparable

I mean we chose not to have it as our master bedroom because of the coldness in winter. Should add, it's a Victorian terrace so not the most energy efficient of buildings. But yeah it's cold!

We have a 3 bed townhouse and the master bedroom is the entire top floor which is the 'loft'. As other people have said, it is absolutely stifling boiling in the summer and very cold in the winter!

My childhood bedroom was an attic room and it was boiling in summer and freezing in winter like others say, but I just had a fan for summer and hot water bottle for winter. We plan on converting ours too, so growing up in one hasn’t put me off at all x

I’m up in a loft conversation with my daughter it does get hot in the summer however it’s been so manageable some days I can’t lie was boiling however a good fan and keep the windows/blinds down it was fine, our daughters room is south facing so not sure if that makes it better or worse but she always slept amazing! She’s 11 months now

Our heating goes off just after he goes to bed so I can try to keep it between 19 and 20 degrees, but by 4am it drops to around 15 so I have the heating come back on again! X
