NICU baby

Hi guys, I had to deliver early at 31w + 6d on November 10th. Our baby girl is doing good in the NICU and she may be able to come home in the next few weeks. I was not ready to deliver, I thought I had another 2 months.. i feel like I do t know anything I’m supposed to research wise. This is my first baby and first time breastfeeding. We got just enough of what we need from our baby shower just before she was delivered. Looking for advise on breastfeeding and the first few weeks at home.

Hey hun, so first few Weeks baby wants to feed constantly And they cluster feed a lot in the early weeks. Make sure you have plenty Of snacks to hand, and water and don’t feel pressured to pump! If you want to exclusively breast feed. Monitor wet and dirty nappies and how baby is , first few weeks all they do is eat sleep to be honest, best of luck! And the frequent feeding is so normal! I felt like all I did was breast feed for the first 6 weeks lol

@Sindi thank you!!! Since she is in NICU we do have to pump. She will come home with 4 of the feeds being a fortified bottle feed so we have decided that dad will handle bottle feeds and the others will be breastfeeding. The snacks and water thing.. omg I never thought I would be starving all the time and exhausted. I feel like I can’t keep up sometimes. I am trying to keep up with her current feeding schedule at the hospital but it is so hard to pump so frequently I feel like 🥺.

Totally understand how you feel hun! But you got this sending love ❤️hope she’s discharged soon x

From my first week experience, my boy naps every 3-4 hours and feeds in between. Cluster feeding is very common, you may be seeing baby wanting to feed for the majority of the day and that's completely normal! Poo should go from a tar black colour, through to green, then yellow through the first week! And baby should be filling about 6-8 nappies daily after the first couple days. (For me, my boy filled half a bag of nappies within his first day then it died down). Breastfeeding tips: Make sure your baby is taking in as much boob as possible for a good latch. If you place the nipple just under baby's nose they should reach up for it which helps with a good latch! You can by things called nipple shields if you are struggling with sore nipples. They are plastic nipple covers with slits to allow milk to pass through. Although I couldn't personally continue on the breast these helped me loads. You will find your mum instincts kick in! Best of luck to you🤍
