Jaundice

My baby is currently 17 days old and has jaundice… her levels have been tested 3 times now and every time they use the light checker they say she is really far off treatment level however she doesn’t seem to be getting any less yellow! My question is, mummas who have had babies with jaundice, how long did it take for them to develop a natural colour because online places say they should clear up in two weeks but I know BF babies can take a little longer… She currently looks a little like Maggie Simpson so I’d love her normal colour back 🤣

Is baby showing any symptoms other than the yellowing skin? If so, or if you are concerned, ask for the doctor/midwife to take a billirubin blood test (done through heel prick) to test baby’s levels. If they are higher, she may need to go under the light for a little while x I know of formula fed babies who cleared up after 2-3 weeks, but can’t advise on BF babies I’m afraid xx

Hey! So our little guy had prolonged jaundice. Bless him, he had to have a fair bit of treatment with the billy blanket. Was a tough couple of weeks for us. But it took sooo long for the yellow to go. He was totally fine but the yellow lingered for like 5/6 weeks xx

Also, we topped up each feed with a little formula on our health visitors advice to help clear it. But I would say if there’s something you’re feeling concerned by, like any other symptoms, for sure push for more checks with the heel pricks like what Rhi said above. It’s worth it for peace of mind alone. Xx

My baby who is BF took around 5 weeks to clear up and it’s happened very slowly. Then one day her hands looked a normal colour. Just keep babies fluids up where possible as it helps flush it out. X

We also topped up with formula but that’s only because she lost quite a bit of weight. Took her a long time to get back to her birth weight too. Probably around 3 weeks.

My LO had prolonged jaundice, she had the bilirubin blood tests multiple times between 4days old and 5w and she was never high enough for treatment. But it took her 5/6w to start to get a normal colour, and even then she looked like shed been on holiday and had a good tan until about 10/11w. 😂 we also BF, I ended up exclusively pumping as she dropped so much weight and struggled to latch. She’s now 18m and you’d never tell she had prolonged jaundice. If you are concerned definitely like the others said, speak to midwife/HV/GP xx

My little girl was born severely jaundiced to the point she was on the transfusion line. It was a long 10 days in the Nicu but she came home 2 days ago with slight yellowing of the eye whites. My midwife told me that some babies are yellow but don’t need treatment where some show no signs (like my little girl) but need a lot of help. I’ve been told it could take 5-6 weeks for her eyes to go back to white and the same with her skin if it does start to yellow. Just keep babies fluid intake up, even if it means topping up with formula as that helps flush it quicker. Bf babies are more likely to be jaundiced with 8/10 having jaundice now. If your still worried ask for an sbr (heel prick) test to put your mind at peace xx

Vitamin D drops

Mine had a little bit of jaundice but it cleared within 10 days. He’s breastfed x

My boy was breastfed (it usually takes longer for BF babies to clear jaundice than formula fed ones) and he had jaundice for a little over a month. It faded from his skin first but there was still some yellow in the corners of his eyes for a while. He got dangerously close to the treatment line in the hospital but thankfully when my milk came in it shot back down.
