Pointing

Do babies learn to point with their whole hand first? My son has recently started doing this but not a proper point yet. But he could just be reaching for something he wants. How can I tell the difference? Anyone else’s baby the same? I keep reading how important it is for a baby to communicate through pointing but we’re not there yet 😢
