Birth certificate

Can someone please walk me through the process of getting my child’s birth certificate. I was told I had to wait at least four months after birth because they were backed up but now I don’t know where to go or who to contact, whether I have to pay or what.

I would contact with the hospital where i gave birth

Depends on where you are but when you’re leaving the hospital they will give you a temporary in most places and give you a time and city hall to go to the pick up the permanent. That depends on the city your hospital you give birth in is

We paid 10 bucks a copy but again that depends on the city hall

@Shantha I’m in Connecticut and they didn’t give me anything. We got kicked out rather abruptly because they needed the bed and the entire stay was terrible. The most basic questions they were unable to answer. I gave birth in different town from where I live and I’d rather not have to drive an hour to get answers.

Well if they didn’t give you a temporary you still have to go to that towns city hall because they don’t go by your address it’s the hospitals. Maybe try calling them

The hospital I had my baby at did everything for me I just provided them all the information for it.

@Asia did you have to go pick it up

No I didn’t it got sent in the mail. I guess it might depend on the state that you live in maybe?

We had to fill out the paperwork at the hospital before we could go home. A few weeks later we received the official document in the mail.

You have to go to or contact the vital records office in the town you gave birth. There’s usually a flat cost for the first one and the a small additional fee for extras (for example, $15 for the first and $3 for each additional). You can either go to the office, call and request them over the phone or do a mail in request. And you have to provide a valid form of ID. You can look up the specific information on your state government website to and it’ll specifically tell you what you need to do.

@Bria thank you ❤️

The hospital submitted my daughter’s information, but I had to request & pay for a physical copy of it from the social security/vital records office. (This is in Virginia, i’m not sure if it’s different in your state). I was able to do it online and they just mailed it to me.

@Bria @Asia @Shantha @Sarah @Lexie I was able to pick up two copies of her birth certificate in my town hall. Because my nearest hospital doesn’t do deliveries they allowed the hospital I gave birth at to send the records to the town that the mother resided in. It was $20 for each copy I got two filled out a form there and I was in and out in half an hour. Thank you so much for all your input!
