Dummys are great until they aren’t.

Regretting introducing my 10 week old to a dummy. Every time it falls out during sleep he wakes up crying, i try soothing him with my voice / placing my hand on him etc but it doesn’t work so i pop the dummy back in and he’s content for 5 mins until it falls out again and the cycle continues for hours. It’s driving me insane and i have serious mum guilt for letting him get attached to it - i introduced one because he was using my nipples as a dummy and i was exhausted. Has anyone else had this problem / any advice.

When my baby keeps spitting the dummy out it means she is hungry so I just give her a boob and she sleeps like an angel after. She mostly has her dummy for naps, car trips etc, she will have it a bit during the day but at night it either falls out once she is asleep or doesnt have it at all.

You‘ve given something to your baby to soothe and comfort him- definitely nothing to feel guilty about! Has he found his hands yet? We definitely had that phase where she kept waking when it fell out (exhausting!) but she is 5 months now and while she still uses a dummy for naps, if it falls out during the night she usually finds her own thumb and sucks that instead. I know you say you regret it but I have friends that regret not introducing the dummy because they won’t settle off the breast and completely reject a dummy now, so it definitely goes both ways. You made the best decision for you at the time and there is nothing wrong with a baby being attached to something that brings it comfort! So please don’t feel guilty.

@Justyna thanks for commenting. I know he’s not hungry as it’s always after a feed plus as soon as i pick him up he falls asleep so i’m sure he just wants the comfort from the dummy or a hug. He sleeps great after the boob but it’s the transfer to the cot that’s the problem (after 20 mins he wakes up needing soothing , that’s when the dummy comes in)

@Sam thank you for commenting and being so kind , you’re right, i shouldn’t be so hard on myself. He finds his hands every now and then so last night my husband attempted to un-swaddle and do arms out but he just kept poking himself in the eye and scratching his face needless to say he woke up very angry lol. That’s interesting about your friends, we can’t win sometimes!

Mine falls asleep on the boob before she is full, I usually burp what wakes her up and feed again. And sometimes after the nappy she wants to latch for the third time. Its hard to keep her awake on the boob especially at night 🤣

My little one has always done this, it's not all the time, but maybe 4-6 times a night when her dummy comes out she cries for it back, then falls straight back to sleep. We're waiting for her to be able to put it back in herself. What has been working, is waiting until she is fully asleep then removing the dummy from her mouth.
