After care

I had my c-section on the 4th of December and for the life of me cannot remember what the doctor told me to do and it doesn’t say in the discharge forms. when should I remove the clear bandage and wash it, I remember him saying if it starts to peel just peel it off but then I also slightly remember hearing only leave it on for a week, so idk what to do. My 2 week appointment isn’t until the 19th and I’m a little worried to take the bandage off and it get infected or something.😭 Please help.

It's been over 4 years since my c-section, but I remember then saying to keep it clean and dry. My belly hung over it, so they wanted me to keep gauze over it for a while (and change it when it got wet/sweaty). I didn't have a bandage over it tho 🤔or maybe it fell off early on

My midwife removed mine on my day 5 visit. My only other instructions were let the shower water run over it. Make sure it's dry. Let it air several times a day. She has checked it on the next visits too and is due back Monday to re weigh our little boy so she will check it then again. I'm 2 weeks post section today

@Cheryl I’m just scared because I’m on the bigger side and my belly slightly hangs over it now and I’m worried that’s gonna cause issues, When did you have your stitches removed?

The hospital you delivered at should have a nurse call line that you can call and ask their specific protocol. Everywhere is going to have different directions because there are so many ways to close a wound. Like just an example- after my Csection they removed the bandage 24 hours after surgery while I was still admitted and there hasn't been a bandage on since, I was just told to wash it with medicated soap in the shower everyday until the bottle ran out. But it sounds like you have stitches, and mine was closed with surgical glue so there could be different instructions for that. I highly suggest finding the number for the nurse line and giving them a call!

I had mine on the 4th too, they put a vacuum bandage thing on it which they took off 2 days ago, I’ve got an overhang and heard that a good thing to do is to fold a sanitary pad in half length ways and put that on it so I asked a few midwives about it and they all said it can be helpful so I’ve been doing that and when I have a wash (I’m just having flannel washes at the minute because I only have a bath no shower) I just use a different flannel with just water and dab the section then air dry it x

@Courtney mines hidden in my overhang!! Have to lift it up to look and air it. I had dissolvable stitches. Can you call the maternity ward at the hospital and ask? Where I am you can call with any queries for 28 days after birth. Or your community midwife?

Things are done so differently in the US. I had my emergency c section at 8am and the next day at 5pm I had a shower and took the bandage off. I was told the best way to heal it was with air. I just washed the top half of my body with soap and let water run over my incision for 6 weeks. I would lay down for 10 minutes after a shower to allow it to air dry after patting dry with a clean dry towel.

You basically have to leave it on till u have your postpartum appointment and they will take it off the stitches ( mine were dissolved) so I didn’t have to take them off after they take off the clean gauze then you can shower but don’t rub it or scrub it just let the water flow on it and then tap dry (make sure it’s always dry ) after 6 weeks you can now clean it better 👍🏽 hope this helps a bit
