Speech delay?

My boy is 16 months old, he is babbling and making sounds - normally ‘baba’ and ‘gaga’. He babbles all day long but not actually saying anything of meaning yet. BUT if all his toys are in front of him and i ask him to pick out the yellow one or the green one for example he will know how to do that. He follows instructions, if i tell him to stay sitting on the bed whilst i go for a wee, he will. He’ll be sat in the same spot when i get back. Is he delayed? Help! A worried mamma.

Not at all. Your sons understanding of words is advanced if anything for a start where he understands colours. LOs are not considered delayed until they are not saying any proper by 2yrs old. According to my nursery ladies they usually go through a sudden leap in speech around 18-24mths where it all just seems to suddenly click for them, before that its like they are just absorbing it like a sponge. We were worried my son isn't saying anything yet (16mth) while all the other LOs in his group are, but then got reminded he has been put in with 18-24mth kids because he is so massive haha
