Elective section UK brought forward if dilated?

Hi all I have an elective section booked for this coming Friday. I am currently 38 +3. I’ve been having braxton hicks and twinges on and off for a couple of weeks and today have been feeling very generally unwell, nauseous, bad back pain etc. I have a gut feeling I am somewhat dilated but have never had a cervical exam. This is my second baby. If I was for example found to be something small like 2cm dilated, would my section be brought forward even without me being in active labour? I’m terrified of leaving it to late and having to have a vaginal birth as I had a horribly traumatic experience last time. Thanks in advance xx

Probably worth going to maternity assessment to get checked, they would bring it forward if they felt this was the start of labour x

Your trust might be different but mine have said to me that if I do go into labour before my c section date ( second pregnacy and my first baby came at 36 weeks and was an emergency c section) that they'd just do just the c section then and it could be classed as a possible emergency c section again due to being in labour but I wouldn't labour for long and im to head straight to hospital once labour starts or my waters break as my hind waters broke first before actual labour started, ring up your maternity ward for advice or call your midwife or the midwife base tomorrow and they'll be able to tell you about your trust etc x

Hiya ... i had this .... I was 4cm when they did my elective .. they will continue with your c-section aslong as your not crowning. I'm in Hertfordshire.. maybe different for other hospitals though .

Dilation is not an indication of when labour will start so they won’t change your c section date based on that. The only time they’d bring your c section forward is if your waters broke or you went into actual labour. Braxton Hicks and twinges are totally normal in these final weeks. Nausea and back pain is also normal, caused by how big the baby is now and putting pressure on both your stomach and your back. Don’t stress about it - they’re not signs of labour! I was 2cm from 37 weeks and baby still came 10 days late! And they never thought about bringing my c section forward because of it x x

@Becca thank you!! This was the part I was unsure of as I know they will do it early if I go “into labour” but didn’t know about dilation :)

Thanks everyone

I was booked in for 38+4, but also had similar symptoms for a few days before. I messaged my doctor and he told me to go for a ctg and he would see if I needed any gastro meds/support for that. Turns out I was having contractions and they did my csection that day; it was classed as an emergency on. They never actually checked dilation so I don't know whether that would be the same situation x

@Ellie that’s really interesting, thank you. I will call my unit I think and see

They wouldn't bring it forward unless you went into labour or your water broke. This is my third section, second scheduled, ive been warned to be prepared to go early as baby is currently engaged, but they didn't worry about checking for dilation. I've also been having contractions on and off, horrible pelvic/back pain, but as others have said, it's normal for this stage in pregnancy. I have 2 weeks to go, hoping i make it that long as i don't have any childcare between now and monday 6th January!

I was the same situation as you with a planned section on the Friday. My waters went on the Sunday night so I was told to go straight in, where contractions started and the baby was delivered via emergency section 12 hours later

I would get checked in maternity assessment unit. They can monitor the contractions to decide how soon is birth. if contractions are regular (5 min or so) it’s established labour. they will take you in to emergency c section as soon as possible as it means you may give birth in 5-18 hours. waters not necessarily need to break

Only if you’re in active labour at 4cm.
