Those who tried for a VBAC birth second time round, was it successful?

I'm currently pregnant with my second after having an emergency section for my first in May 2023. I can't decide whether to risk trying for a VBAC this time around, or book in for an elective section. With my first my waters broke and I laboured for roughly 36 hours, before ending up having a section due to an infection. To be honest I didn't find the contractions too bad and know I can handle that part, but I struggled massively with the exhaustion of it all. Now I have a toddler to look after I'm worried about being in hospital for 4-5 days again and if the natural birth doesn't work, being absolutely exhausted having to look after the toddler and the new baby. Those of you who tried for a VBAC birth was it successful and would you recommend it? Or is it easier to just have an elective section and know exactly what to expect and when the baby will be born etc.? Thanks all x

I had a c section in May 2023 and just trialed a VBAC in October 2024 (17 months later) and although it ended in another emergency c-section, I’m glad I tried as I would have always wondered ‘what if’. I think it depends on a lot of your personal factors - what your personal risks are (BMI, strength of scar, reason why you required c section) as well as if you want more children etc. You could always say you’ll VBAC if you go into labour spontaneously by X date, but have an elective c section booked (for example I had one booked for 41 weeks and said I’d VBAC if laboured spontaneously before then, otherwise go for elective at 41w)

My first was a c section due to breach and FGR diagnosis, so “scheduled suddenly” but not an emergency. Th wee fore it was a pleasant experience overall, even though it wasn’t my original plan. I was only in hospital for 2 nights and healing was too hard. But now pregnant with my second, I’m really wondering the same thing! I would absolutely love a VBAC, but I have a fear of an emergency c section that ends in an even more difficult recand li get hospital stay. I know theee is risks with everything and we just have to make the best decision and trust our providers z @Becca I think that is what I am going to plan on. I will schedule a C-section at a certain point and hope to go into labor naturally and try for a vbac. How long did you end up being in hospital for the second C-section after your TOLAC?

C-section May 2021, successful VBAC January 2023. About 20 month gap I think. I got pregnant about 11 month PO. Did it again about 11/12m PP and had another successful VBAC. get you a good OB, our bodies are very capable and interventions are way too normalized.

C-section March 2020 due to failure to progress past 8cm (I was exhausted and in pain from the baby's head pushing against a nerve in my pelvis/leg for hours and hours). I have anxiety and my hips were tense af. I learned alot and with my second I got massages and chiropractor adjustments regularly and made sure my hips were ready and not tight. I had a successful VBAC April 2023. Went into labor spontaneously at 8am and pushed him out at exactly 1pm. I had been having prodromal labor for at least a week, maybe 2 so that helped prepare my body for sure. I would suggest having a plan for a week or two to have someone help with the toddler and newborn so you can focus on yourself and sleep and whatever appointments you might want/need to get yourself feeling more okay, then you can breathe easy for the after plans being in place ❤️ You can do this! Trust your gut. Don't let your fear decide.
