Milk at night

Is it normal to have less milk in the evening? I’m worried my baby isn’t getting enough milk before bed. She’s started waking around midnight which she never used to do for a feed, but if my partner gives her a bottle of expressed milk she’ll have 5oz and sleep through. He’s given her a bottle tonight and I pumped in place of her feed and literally only got 1oz. When I pump in the morning / mid afternoon I get 4/5oz!

The lowest levels of prolactin (the hormone that jumpsstarts milk production) is lowest in the late afternoon/evening but it increases at night/early morning. Totally normal to have less in the evening. If you want to increase it though, you can pump after the evening feed and it'll tell your body that you need more produced at that time.

@Stephanie ah thank you, I do remember reading that it can be lower in the evening. Is the amount you pump directly related to the amount baby would feed anyway? So if I can only pump 1oz at that time does that mean she’s only been having 1oz for her last feed?

Baby is more efficient at getting the milk than any pump will be

I decided to start giving baby a bottle of expressed at this time as no matter if I pump 3 times after feeding I haven't been able to increase my evening supply to more than 1oz. He now always has 7oz before bed and will sleep 5-7 hours before wanting a feed then goes 2 hours at a time after that and we are both much happier it takes the pressure off me and means Dad can do bedtime too

@Flo how old is your baby? Mine only drinks 4oza-5 and I’m not sure if I should increase it as he’s often sucking his fist afterwards but not sure if he just doesn’t know if he’s full or if it’s a soothing tactic

@Maya 14 weeks he has 5-6ozs when given the night I always make 6 now because he was draining 5 but he doesn't quite finish it usually
