Encouraging/nurturing interests

So my little boy is utterly obsessed with cars (any vehicle really but particularly cars). He knows every car brand. He makes my husband save all the logos on his phone 😂😂 we have no idea where this interest has come from but it’s completely led by him. I went for a meal with other mum friends from his playgroup, they know his interest because he questions them about their cars and they said “are you doing anything to explore this interest of his further”. Just made me think should I be doing something to encourage this interest further?? Im just not a pushy person. I’m a complete girly girl and have no clue about cars 😂😂😂 any other vehicle obsessed toddler mums and do you have any ideas how I can nurture this interest and passion he has? (I took him to an air hanger last weekend to see a Concorde and he honestly hasn’t stopped talking about it 😂😂😂 honestly I feel like I’m not doing enough - I had a brother growing up but he was only interested in sport!)

Also have a car obsessed boy! Well transport really - cars, trains, diggers etc. We don’t do anything extra with him - is there anything you can do for a 3 year old? 😂

@Emily forgot about diggers! 😂 I know, exactly what I thought when they said it. What can I do involving cars for a 3 year old? Haha have you been to Diggerland? My little boy loved that!

No we haven’t actually! We’ve taken him on a steam train and open top bus 😂

@Emily ooo I haven’t done open top bus, will have to try that 😂

I’m not sure there is anything you can do to “further” his little passion at this age. Take him to see a car race or to a car show? That’s probably all you can do. But I agree with you about not being pushy, let him just enjoy it because he loves cars and it makes him happy 🩷

When my little one shows a sustained interest in something, I just try to centre play activities around it, not really furthering, but immersing, - I’ve had boys in a class that have liked cars, so we had a car garage role play area, screwdrivers and tools to take apart toy cars and fine motor playing with screws, nuts and bolts etc. car magazines for cutting and sticking. Number recognition making our own number plates. Tuff trays with numbers on the cars and car parking spaces, making our own bridges, ramps and race tracks etc. we used road tape on the carpet to make shapes. There’s lots you can do with interest in vehicles, but you shouldn’t ever feel like you need to be pushing or forcing anything. My son is into vehicles too, but more specifically tractors and different farm vehicles, and construction vehicles too.

@Emilie I thought about that, someone that works for us goes to car shows all the time so I’m going to ask him about it! Yes exactly, I want to let him enjoy it without making it into a thing xx

@Chloe thank you so much Chloe! These are amazing ideas and things I know he would love to do!! I’m constantly playing “car park” 😂😂 my parents were very pushy with my brother and it turned him off things so I’m really wary of not doing that! Construction vehicles are also a favourite. I’m pregnant with a baby girl, Im hoping she likes cars because there are enough in our house to last a lifetime! Xx
