Birth Options

Hi all, need your advice or maybe someone is or was in a similar situation. I was diagnosed with low lying placenta, at 28 weeks it was still at 2cm. On top of that I also have declining blood platelets (last birth I ended up with 70 at the end). Of course there is still a chance that placenta will move, but it only moved by 0.3mm from 20 to 28 weeks, and I have posterior placenta, and my belly seems to have done most of growing by now. I was hoping for a home birth, but with these 2 risk factors it feels very irresponsible and naive. What birth option would you choose?

Hospital with the most structure I could have. Even without any risk factor

With a low lying placenta, I think the only option is c-section (correct me if I'm wrong). I was shown low at the 20 week scan and was mentally prepared to go for c-sec if it hadn't moved. I think if it moves then it's just down to what you think is best. I'm opting for homebirth now, but if there were any other risks that popped up I'd go midwife lead at maternity ward.

@Gemma do you mind sharing how much did it move by now that you feel comfortable with home birth?

Yes, it was 1cm at 20 weeks. They booked me in for 32 weeks and by then it had completely cleared from the cervix and was off to the bottom left. I think I'd only be comfortable if baby's head was not blocked from cervix at all since the cervix will need to open 10cm wide. I think there is an injection they can give you for the low platelets if it's bad enough. Maybe ask your midwife team about it. The decision should be clear at your 32 week scan (I'm assuming they booked you in for that?). I only made the decision at that point too.

@Gemma I am booked for 35 weeks scan, no idea what to expect. I am less worried about blood platelets as last time I had no issues with bleeding. But if smth gets ruptured during vaginal delivery it will be of course more critical. I am just afraid that at 35 weeks I will be still at I don’t know 3cm at best, which won’t make me feel comfortable and confident with any of decisions 🥲 I think I will be more comfortable with 5cm and above🤞
