Decreased imitation and babbling

My son took some time to start properly babbling and imitating, especially imitating. But he did it, and it was there on and off. However, I now realize I haven't heard either in a while. Also, he has no first word and doesn't point. From what I know of autism these things might be a symptom. His gross motor skills are extremely advanced and keep advancing so I'm consoling myself that he's just focusing on that aspect of development first, but this is getting unnerving. How are your kids doing with this?

If they were doing these skills and they have disappeared always best to seek the guidance of a professional

@Jess thank you for your response. I am so scared

I would ask a professional before going down a Google rabbit hole / stressing. There can be SO many reasons for delays. Does he use a paci ? Sometimes this can delay speech (mine does so no judgment of you use one) Do you read to him frequently or use same common words? He could just be focusing on motor skills. My son seems to likes the fine motor skills more than other things. He doesn’t clap or consistently wave though ? Our pediatrician isn’t concerned though bc he’s hitting all his other milestones. So she said he probably is just not interested in those things sometimes babies aren’t and get it later.

@Mic our pediatrician said the same last week. He's walking independently and has amazing gross motor skills overall. When I complained about the lack of his communication skills, she said it's fine precisely because he's walking so well. She said that the rules about milestones are flexible because kids develop at their own pace, and it's important that he IS developing. I am still not fully at peace, I still wish he was better at communicating and worry because he's not. I'm not sure if it's my maternal intuition warning me about something deeper going on here, or my extreme anxiety that I've been struggling with even before getting pregnant, which tends to get the best of me very often.
