Basic question but…

First time mummy here, due in a few weeks. can anyone talk me through what you’d do in night with a newborn if you’re breastfeeding. If they wake up, do nappy, feed then settle or nappy last? Feel like I should know this 😂

With my first I would do nappy and then feed as he would usually fall back to sleep when feeding or immediately after burping - however be prepared that it isn’t uncommon that baby will poo whilst you’re feeding them and you may end up doing it again before resettling 😅

Yep - nappy first and then bf as most babies will go straight to sleep after a feed - you don't want to be waking them up again

However, you will get to know your own baby - they're all a bit different and you'll find what works 😊

Agree with the others. Don’t forget the burping! I would burp in between swapping boobs so that if she fell asleep after the second boob then it wasn’t the worst case. We also had to do a lot of gas legs to help her discomfort if she was unsettled. It’s moving a babies legs in a cycling motion to help them pass gas.

Depending on how well baby feeds it can sometimes be helpful to feed on one side, change nappy to help wake baby up a little so that they will feed on the other side. This will make sure baby has had a good feed and also help you as you will want to try and feed on both sides x

Thanks for the question! Also wasn’t sure either, so it’s Really helpful 🥰

Also- I’ve read that you need to wake them up in the middle of the night for a feed every 2-3 hours even if they’re sleeping through… what’s everyone’s opinion on that?

@Alexa you only really need to do this until they’re back to their birth weight and then after that you can just wait for them to wake you up - they’ll let you know when they’re hungry!

@Alexa my first fed every 4 hours like clockwork, my midwife told me to feed her every 2 hours because she hadn’t gained back to her birth weight and she absolutely hated it, so we just carried on feeding her when she wanted it and she was perfectly fine xx

Yes I agree nappy first then feed as they most of the time fall asleep after they have been burped. The last thing you want to do is for them to be woken again for a nappy change and cold wet wipe

I always did feed and nappy. He’d feed to sleep, usually poo afterwards and he didn’t wake up whilst I changed him. They’re all different. You’ll find what works!

First boob, change nappy, then second boob x

Nappy first. If nappy last you wake them back up again and will take longer to settle.
