Car Journeys

Hello! My baby (5 months) cannot cope with being in the car. She is absolutely distraught. Has anyone else had this or got any tips? I’ve tried countless distractions and white noise.

No advice as we’ve had the same but my little girl sits in the front with me now and it’s made a massive difference x

I've struggled with this too. I'm sure you've tried toys but I got a Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes which is the only thing that will distract him. I also play songs he likes on repeat - if he's awake then The Happy Song, and if he's tired then Misty Mountains (it is torture listening to them over and over though!). They're the only things that help us. We've also bought an anti sweat liner for the car seat because when my baby gets distraught in the car he gets quite sweaty. Good luck, it's so horrible isn't it 🙁

Have you tried singing? My LO hates having music on but is quiet when I sing to her!

What car seat is she in and does she have a nice secure fit? My baby gets a toy in the car, a Lamaze robot, because she can't reach around her straps to play with or chew on her hands, so she holds the toy instead.

Our little one didn’t like the car, until we changed to a much more supportive car seat. Now she loves it! I got advice from the Facebook group Car seat safety UK. It’s been a game changer.

@Jo interesting, which one do you have now?

We were the same until we realised that we were always feeding her immediately before putting her in the car seat (hoping it would keep her content) but actually the angle of the infant car seat meant she was uncomfortable when very full. I now try and time car journeys at least 30 mins after she’s had a feed so she’s a bit ‘emptier’ + give a toy + play white noise in car/sing to her if a bit fussy and it seems to have made a huge difference for us

My little one was the same in the infant carrier. We changed to an ERF seat and he’s so much happier

My little one would cry and scream to the point of being red in the face and sweaty and inconsolable until I got him out of his car seat and snuggled him into my chest rocking him and then he'd look at me with the saddest face it made me feel so sorry for him. We introduced a dummy just for car rides at first which seemed to help a little but he got worse again even a short 2 minute drive to the shop would be a nightmare. He was in his sisters old joie juva. We went to the lakes for a week and it was hell half the way there and back (4hrs each way) and every trip to drive to walks etc he'd been the same so I tried him in his sisters graco turn2me and he was fine in it so decided to swap him permanently into it and he's so snug now and supported and yes he still gets upset at times (hates driving when it's dark) but he's 99% better! He'll be in his sisters other joie ispin 360 when he gets a better fit. He's on the 99th centile for height and 93rd for weight so he's had a great fit in graco since 17wks old x

Mine was like this until til I timed it with nap time. Most of the times I go out can be planned, so I wait till 15 mins before nap time and then I go OR I wait till he’s been awake about 15/20 and then leave (short trips this way). Always make sure a bottle isn’t due in the next half hour or less. He has a toy to play with or his muslin. I talk to him and play music also.

The happy song - always helped my son
