Writing....?

Um...so I just saw a post elsewhere where someone said their 3 year old can write their name. I googled and it does say that on some sites that this is a skill they should learn at this age. Anyone else not got a cat in hells chance of this happening 😂 I have several of those whiteboard number and letter books, I've tried sitting down with my son to do this before. He ended up just drawing on his face before launching the marker at the wall and running away. And that was the most successful attempt, because he actually sat down on a chair for more than two minutes. I can't be the only one? AM I THE ONLY ONE? 😂 I didn't think this was something they needed to be doing now?! He has little to no interest in drawing either (makes me sad as I was a little artiste)

Please don’t worry about this. It’s not age appropriate to be able to write their name. It’s not part of school readiness and it’s certainly not something that if they can’t do means they’re behind. SO many things come before that. And, as a reception teacher for a long time and now a deputy headteacher, I HATE workbooks 🤭 and the idea of forcing little people to sit at a desk and do letter and number formations. Great if your kid loves it, but it’s not the way most children learn, it’s not taking into account any of the important milestones that come before and it’s just plain boring for lots of children!!! My son would not be enthusiastic at all about it, you’re not alone!

My eldest could write her name from 2, she is amazing and loves crafts and art and honestly will sit for hours and colour/draw etc… My youngest is 3.5 and can barely draw a circle 😂😂

Elodie would rather stab me in the eye with a pencil than write with it She will draw shapes, colour etc but writing NAH! And Yanno what she’s my second and I did the whole omg they should be doing x y z but actually no they shouldn’t! She can recognise her name - which is good enough! Someone else can get her to write 🤣

So my little one can spell his name out but he can't hold a pen/pencil properly so no way he can do that yet haha. Xx

@Chloe thank you! I was shocked 😂 I'm relieved to hear I don't necessarily need to attempt the writing workbooks again any time soon

@Jae🌝 that was me 😂 but I wouldn't play outside at all, and I refused to join in with PE for about six months after starting school 😂 my son is definitely the opposite. He'll climb a tree if he was allowed but sitting still on a chair? Absolutely not.

@Amy hahaha yep, pens at the moment for us are usually used as weapons, or darts

@Ruth oh that's a good idea actually! We've just taught first and second name, so maybe I could see if he can learn to spell his name out verbally, that could actually be useful if he ever got lost somewhere too. Got to get him pronouncing the letter L first 😂 at the moment he calls himself "Yeon" 😂

@Jennifer yeon that's just the cutest 😍 🤣 Oliver knows his full name, Oliver James, but before he says his surname he says Oliver James and...... (surname) 🤣 xx

My little boys preschool aim to have them all writing their name by the time they go up to reception, but we are a way off 😂

@Emily you sure about that? The way they are growing they will be going to school next week 😭🤣 xx

Don’t bother lol My 3 year old can’t even write letter A She can only draw loke proper drawing

No way, my boy is very far from writing and I’m not encouraging it. I’m encouraging being outside and climbing things which suits him right now

Schools/nurseries will be focusing on general activities to strengthen hand muscles for writing until around age 4/5. Not the act of writing itself. So things like threading beads, squeezing playdough, scooping things, using tweezers to transport objects.

My little one loves drawing and colouring but she can't form letters yet, she knows the letters and what her name starts with. I wouldn't worry I'm sure it's not something they need to know before school

My little boy could write his name at 2. My little girl (3.5) wouldn't even know how to write the first letter. She's so witty and excels in independence over her brothe but she's just not interested in the reading/writing yet. Try not to worry about it X

I think it fully depends on the child! My friends son is 4 and is only just taking an interest in drawing, holding a pencil etc whereas my daughter has always loved anything to do with colouring/drawing/craft and has been able to write her name since she was 3 years old. I wouldn’t worry. He will pick it up when he’s ready 🥰

My 3yo can write his name and a few other words. He doesn't even go to school. He was able to write his name on Christmas cards (terribly) last year which was a month before turning 3. This isnt the norm though, most kids can't. We encouraged fine motor skills with games like bead threading, jigsaw puzzles, glueing and sticking, tweezer shape sorting ect.

Our childminder told us the schools near us ask them NOT to teach children so that the school can teach them in their own style. Schools much prefer that you have things like toilet training and dressing themselves nailed!!
