EBF AND SLEEP

I know I may have a unicorn baby so know a lot of people won’t have this ‘problem’ but my baby is sleeping rather long stretches. Tonight he went to sleep at 8:30 and had a feed at 7:45, at 2:30am he was still asleep but as it had been almost 7 hours since his last feed I got him up and fed him. I was feeling engorged but not super super engorged but uncomfortable. I’m worried going such long stretches (he’s only 9 weeks old) will decrease my supply. He’s a big chunk and has always been a good weight and looks healthy. What do I do? Continue to wake him? If I don’t do i need to pump instead? Help.

I would let him sleep and pump During the times you wake up uncomfortable. If anything you could use a manual pump just until you’re comfy again and then go back to sleep. If you don’t want to your supply will naturally start to decrease during those time

@Maddie I just don’t want to pump and then him wake up lol I don’t know how long he would actually go without waking as I’ve not tested it yet I’ve always woken him, I know this may change next week, but he does seem to be a routine baby, he knows what he likes, and that is sleep 😂

Your baby will still be able to extract all the necessary milk even if you pump right before he wakes up. That’s really the best option. Alternatively you can also try to just place him at the breast and dream feed without waking.

9 weeks old is still young so your supply may not be totally protected at the moment and adaptable. My baby did do longer stretches around that age and I would hand express or use my haakaa pump just for relief as I did not want mastitis or a blocked duct, literally just for your own comfort. But, as long as you respond to feeding cues, your boobs should keep supply and demand and will be okay xx

My baby started going longer than this so I used the Hakka just until I was comfortable. She is 14 weeks now and goes 12 hours without a feed and my supply has been ok with this. I just use the Hakka now just before her first feed so she doesn't get a crazy letdown. 🤣

So breastfeeding is supply and demand. Around this age my baby slept 10 hours straight through a good chunk of nights (4 months hit and he didn’t sleep longer than 40 mins for months and now at a year wakes hourly so don’t be so sure you have a unicorn just yet!). I’ve never pumped and I’ve never had any supply issues - now this may be luck but if baby isn’t waking all pumping will do is tell your body to make more milk when you don’t need it because your baby is asleep. If your baby starts to wake again then you’ll make milk again. You can hand express off a little to make yourself comfy if you’re feeling engorged x

I would pump if he's not waking up so your supply doesn't decrease. Good luck!

Use a Hakka and just let a bit out. Let baby sleep

My BF baby (8 weeks) sleeps for stretches of the same, I still feed on demand in the night (I.e. don’t really feed at night) and my supply is totally fine x

You could dream feed?

Around this age baby should be starting to get used to getting the milk they need even in a short period of time so maybe he is getting a big feed before bed and doesn't really need the milk. My little one dream fed at this age and she has been doing so since, so she'll happily sleep 12 hours without needing to wake up because milk is already there

I wouldn't worry about waking him or pumping, my LO is 10 weeks old and has been sleeping right through the night since 5 weeks old, going 10 hours without a feed. I checked if this was okay with my health visitor and she said as baby is a good weight (91st centile) and continuing to gain weight then I don't need to wake her or pump in the night either as the supply will adjust to meet baby's needs.
