Potty Training Advice

We have been potty training my 3 year old for a few months now. It’s always hit and miss with her. Today since I’ve been home, I’ve been getting her to go potty every 30 minutes. She’s not going in her potty but would go in her pull up or potty training panties. Even at preschool, she’s not going in the potty but going in her pull up. I’m so close to giving up on potty training her. Any advice or suggestions?

Maybe try again in a month or two. She's showing you that she's not ready, so follow her lead.

My son’s 2 and a half and I tried potty training for a few days then I gave up. He wouldn’t tell me when he needed a wee or a poo. He would poo on the floor and continue playing. Does your daughter tell you when she needs to go?

@Incognito She will flap her hands up and down when she has to go poo but not when she has to go pee. There are many times where she’ll say poo and already done it. We’ve been alternating between pull ups and potty panties.

@Sara Thank you Sarah. I really appreciate that. I’ve heard of so many moms getting their children potty trained earlier than 3 so I figured I would get her started at 3.

@Shana Wilson, my boy, is fully toilet/potty trained day and night, and he is 2y7m. However, he showed me a lot of readiness signs before we started at 16m. Some signs he was showing me - hasn't peed overnight since 4 months - hiding when pooping/peeing - telling me that he pooped/peed - taking his nappy off - intrigued by the toilet - running to the toilet when feeling the urge to pee or poo - flushing the toilet -wiping his bum If your girl has a few of these signs, then definitely keep going. If not, leave it until she does. If you push her too much, she'll regress, and it'll take her longer to get the gist of things. Toddlers/kids will do things at their own time. She'll get there when she is ready.

I would leave it for a few months too and then start again with a different method like naked first and then to pants and then to undies and pants. I would ditch the pull-ups and training pants (for days at least) altogether.

We just went naked for a while and spent time in the backyard. It did take longer than 3 days like I googled..but she had to get used to the sensation in her body. Every time she peed, we'd positively reinforce "did you feel that, just before you peed, there was a sensation, that means your pee is coming" then "you just peed, next time we'll sit on the potty/toilet". We hit roadblocks until we decided to fully commit even travelling in the car. She saved poos for her nap time nappy for a while but now does both on the toilet

@Mirka I tried doing naked first but it just does not work for us because we have carpet flooring so it’s harder to clean and secondly I have to watch my son 24/7 and couldn’t do anything in the house. When I kept my son’s pants on, he didn’t like the feeling of getting wet so he’d want his pants off but if he was naked he will just wee on the floor and not be bothered

@Maggie I can’t see your comment for some reason. 😞

Oh crap potty training book has a lot of troubleshooting for 3+

@Maggie Where can I get that book from?

@Shana Wilson libraries usually have it

Ditch the pull ups, they need to be in regular underwear.

@Shana Wilson Walmart, target, amazon

@Maggie Thank you! 😊

@Lisa What do you do if they go in the underwear whether it’s pee or poo?
