Breast feeding journey ending

When my little one was around a week old my nipples were so bad due to a bad latch that I had to introduce formula as I was crying in pain and bleeding every feed. Since then we’ve combi fed. She’s now 5 months old and bf has been getting less and less and now I’ve had to move to size 2 teat and she doesn’t even want to bf at night. I’ve been pumping to try and get at least 1 bottle of milk for her to have a day and I usually manage about 4oz a day. My partner just threw what I pumped all day yesterday down the sink by accident 😭😭 I don’t know whether I should admit this is the end of bf or keep trying to pump. Is 1 bottle of breast milk a day enough to give her the goodness? I’m just sad I had to introduce it in the first place and was never able to get out the top up cycle and now here we are. Sorry just feeling sad today 😞

One bottle is still good! It’s still packed with good stuff from you, and any antibodies/etc that baby might need should you get a cold or something! But it’s hard to and as an exclusively pumping mum I KNOW it’s super difficult. You’re doing amazingly and if you don’t want to continue for your own wellbeing that’s still good, 5 months is a great amount of time to have done this for. Especially considering your initial pain! Personally I would continue but I’m stubborn and never know when to stop anything, but also I like the idea of baby having some breast milk still. But ultimately it’s down to how YOU feel. Also what pump are you using? Sometimes a flange change or pump change could help get more out if you’re looking to provide more!

Thanks so much for your message! Yeah I hate the thought of her not getting any breast milk so I think I’ll carry on at least pumping enough for 1 bottle. It’s a Momaini pump from Amazon, so not necessarily the best, I have just moved down a flange size which has helped. I did wonder about getting a momcozy or elvi to see whether that would help pump some more! Xx

Flange size deff makes a difference! I use the Nullie wearable one s32, I think it’s like a budget dupe momcozy. Was £60-70 for the pair ok Amazon. I really love it. I had their other wearable one but this one is SO good. I get a way better output and it’s a discreet sound/easy to wear :) But genuinely you’re doing really well to get what you’re getting still! I hope it continues to get better for you! I’d recommend checking flange size every month, hormone fluctuations and various other factors could contribute to a change in size so just regularly check!

Also the duck bills in pumps need to be replaced every so often which helps as well. If you run yours under a tap, if the water stays in it and doesn’t start straight away dripping out it’s still good. If it starts leaking from the bottom it’s time to replace it!
