Thanks so much Joss, that is very helpful, I don't use a dummy and my milk is high in lipase sadly so can't use my frozen stuff and she wont drink it. But will keep at it and look at those bottles if we are still struggling 🤞
This is really helpful thanks @Joss ! She advised against freezing as it changes the taste @Mikaila
@TMR yes, I read that. I am telling her I previously froze my stuff and I know it does change taste as my milk is high in lipase sadly so I don't use frozen stuff anymore, only fresh. Not everyone has high lipase milk so some people don't have problems with their frozen milk
Just remembered a few more!! - make sure you (mum) always offers the bottle to start off with, not dad. Baby will associate mum with feeding and understand that it is safe. We found our girl was just screaming in dads face as if to say “you’re not the right person and I’m hungry” - stand up and walk around while trying to feed with the bottle to keep them distracted. - alternatively put the tv on for them. (Understand tv is a controversial tool) but we found that it distracted our girl enough to get it in her mouth! - aim the bottle to the roof of the mouth to start the sucking reflex. - start the feed with a colostrum syringe (if you still have some). This will give baby a taste for the milk and expect it Im so glad I can be of some help, I remember how stressful this was and I do not wish it on anyone. Just remember, everything is a phase and with consistency a baby can adapt to anything.
@Joss amazing thank you. Yeah I have been trying too and I have been aiming to the top of the mouth too as that worked previously. She had been quite fussy of late and was more interested in rubbing the teat over her gums so think teething is starting and potentially sleep regression too 🤯. Hopefully it's just a blip as having a few hours to myself is much needed. I shall try again tomorrow. Thank you!!!
@Mikaila it’s such hard work, I know. It’s a slow process, but once it’s over, I promise you’ll look back and think god what was I so stressed for?? You’ll get there!
@Joss I hope so! You have given loads of ideas to try, I was worried I was going to have to be 100 different bottles and have no success so feeling a bit more hopeful now 😊
Also going to give all of this a go as I just gave up trying!
@Joss just wanted to say another thanks! After much perseverance and my LO messing about managed to get her to take 1oz yesterday and 2.5 oz today from a bottle. Only from me though, not having it when her dad tries it 🤣 so some work to do but progress 😍 xx
@Mikaila ahhh! I was going to ask how you got on. So happy for you xx
@Joss thank you! She definitely loves playing with it rather than drinking out of it though 🤣 x
@Mikaila at least if she’s playing with it, she’s exploring it and not getting upset by it! Mine still does it sometimes now. She’ll have a moment of rejecting it because she wants the breast. She did it today while I was out for lunch and I just thought no. I don’t want to breastfeed at a dinner table, in an uncomfortable chair, stress myself out and let all my food go cold. So I just let her play with it and fidget, drink a little bit and then spit it out. It took about an hour, but eventually she was hungry enough to take the whole thing. Luckily she didn’t absolutely melt down!
@Joss aww absolutely, I am glad you got her to take it eventually. Perseverance is the key. Yeah she likes to rub it along her gums and then shout at it for a bit like it's a microphone, it was quite funny actually 🤣 xx
- offer it every single day consistently. - offer it at different times in the day. - offer during different stages of the feed. - try the brand of bottle same to the dummy if using one. - nano Bebe bottles are specifically made for breastfed babies and the only one that worked for us as you can squeeze some milk in their mouth. - always warm it up / do freshly expressed as freezing / cooling can change the taste. - lay baby down on their side towards your chest, as if you’re about to breast feed, and then offer the bottle. This position can sometimes feel more natural for babies. It took us about 2 weeks of solid consistency and I can honestly say it was the hardest thing I’ve experienced yet being a mother. But well worth it in the end. Good luck 🩷
