I've heard vastly different things regarding drinking and breastfeeding. I seldom drink and would have an occasional drink when I nursed my second son and never noticed a difference. Tasted my own milk as well. Im sober now but was told "if you can find your baby, you can feed your baby" as long as you're not piss drunk I heard it's fine to nurse baby
Other countries are a lot more loose with guidelines in general, ie if you can hold your baby, you can feed your baby. My logic is, BM comes from blood. If you have 1 maybe 2 drinks, you are still legal to drive which is 0.08% alcohol in blood which translates to the same in milk. Non alcoholic beverages need to be below 0.5% to be non alcoholic. Fruit juices can have that level of alcohol in them.
Didn’t get specific answers from my dr but I’ve followed “if you can find your baby, you can feed your baby”. To me if I think I’d be find getting behind the wheel to drive then I’m okay to feed. I would save for a bath or other purpose if you decide you’re too buzzed. Also, I’ve heard those test strips can turn out to be not accurate since juices like OJ can show up on them too.
@Leslie That’s how my doctor stated it too: “If you can find your baby and hold your baby, then you can breastfeed your baby.” I was surprised because 15 years ago when I had my oldest daughter, the general thought was only one drink or pump and dump, but they say that has changed because they’ve found the body is better than previously believed at filtering out what goes into breast milk.
There’s breast milk alcohol test strips on Amazon, def check those out! Better to pump and use for a bath to be safe though, but my doula told me general rule of thumb is one drink is safe, but everyone’s body is different. Best bet would be the test strips.
