Inflamed duct

Hi ladies! I have an inflamed duct, and I’ve read a few articles with mixed advice. Some suggest feeding the baby first from the sore breast, then the other; others say to start with the unaffected side and switch to the sore one to ease demand and help it calm down. What do you all think?

Don’t even stress any of this.. I SWEAR BY the herbal tincture “happy ducts” you can find it on Amazon! Take as directed every two hours until you feel good again. Wont affect your supply at all. This stuff is MAGIC!!!

But also yes feed from the sore breast, and then the other one as normal. Don’t only feed from the sore one

I experienced this and fed from the sore breast. Advil, icing after each feed, and lymphatic massage (from nipple outward) worked every time.

I looked it up on Amazon, but it wouldn’t arrive for another two days, and I’m in a lot of pain right now. Do you know where else I could find it?

Yeah that’s the downside.. hmm I’m not sure, I would Google it! How bad are you feeling right now? My sisters midwife told her Ibprofien with cold compress helps as well.

Okay I used to get clogged ducts ALL the time and this is what my lactation consultant told me to do: Treatment- ice packs (only do like 15 min each hour), advil, veerrryy gentle massage if you feel like it, sometimes I take a warm shower but keep this to a minimum as you want cold rather than heat. Feed as usual-don’t pump or feed extra to try to clear it. Prevention: Legendairy Milk’s sunflower lecithin! They sell it at target (in the breastfeeding section of the baby section-not with supplements!) and walmart or you can order online. I take 2 a day to prevent clogs and you take 2 AM and 2 PM if you’re treating one. This stuff is amazing, it helps “smooth” your milk out for lack of a better term so now I only ever get a clog if I forget to take it. Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Your in Boise area? I could also just sell you mine in the meantime! I have one on hand

Sunflower lecithin has overnight Amazon shipping, I feel like it helps a ton. I fed on the affected side first, I’m not really sure if I could tell a difference depending on which side baby fed on first.

I was told to feed from the sore one first, too. Massage, heat/ice and "breast gymnastics" (it's really a thing 😂) All of these things really helped! I also second the sunflower lecithin!

I agree with the icing and feeding and massage, that’s all I did. I did pump before I breastfed since babies can be kinda aggressive with it so I wanted my boob to be a little less inflamed before I offered it to baby and I felt great the next day

@Mirranda just commenting to alert you and the original poster I’m moving to Nampa in April so we’ll have to connect!

@Bella Gerry wait are you in SD? I just lived from there in October

I am! How funny

Yes to sunflower lecithin! It helps asap. I notice a difference when I stop taking it…

Thank you all for your advice! It’s so nice to know I can find support here 🥰

I just dealt with a clogged duct that progressed to mastitis very quickly so I would suggest keeping your OB on speed dial and keeping them abreast (hehe) of your symptoms. I never got a fever but had the worst chills and body aches along with discoloration and extreme discomfort. I second feeding from the affected side first and utilizing antinflammatories + cold to relieve the swelling but massaging toward the nipple with hot compress or a hot shower were what ultimately provided relief (in addition to completing the course of antibiotics). Will certainly be keeping sunflower lecithin on hand to avoid this in the future. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone!!

The Medela hand pump is so helpful for getting out my clogs
