Exclusively expressing/ combo feeding advice

Just wanted to see if this is normal/ if anyone else is going through the same!.. Currently pumping my breastmilk and giving it to my 4 week old by bottle and then formula at night to help her sleep a little longer. I’m just finding that I’ll give her a good amount of my breast milk but then she’s just so unsettled on it and will want more within an hour/hour and a half?! I think possibly my milk just hasn’t got much fat in it/ staying power because I’m totally worn out with running around after my 1 year old🥴 I exclusively pumped with my first and she was fine but this time around she just seems to bit and bob throughout the day and is never satisfied. I don’t know whether to just stop and formula feed as she’s more settled in it but I get so satisfied seeing her have my milk. Anyone going through something similar?😬

I'm similar! My 2 week old is combi express and formula, and is slightly unsettled unlike my first who was formula and very content! I don't want to stop expressing because it makes my little mum heart proud & happy to see her take it! Going to give it a few more weeks and if she's not settling down ill make the switch to just formula and see if that sorts her out xx

My midwife told me babies digest breast milk quicker and more fully than formula which has a degree of bulking. So yes, breast milk will not have them feeling as full for as long but it will have the added benefit of antibodies that only you will have to pass on so I guess it depends if you find the benefits outweigh the negatives. I do so I persevere (although I’m only a week in so that may change). I’m currently combi feeding too. Primarily breast but formula at night for longevity. He tends to only use boob for soothing and will almost immediately fall asleep so for actual feeding it’s pumped or formula and I haven’t quite built up the pumped supply to exclusively pump either.

Have you tried breast compressions when you are pumping? My infant feeding lady showed me the “breast milk whale” where it starts with watery based milk then Towards the end (the tail of the whale) it’s the fattier milk that keeps them fuller… when you do breast compressions it pushes the fattier milk through the milk ducts - it may help?!?

Breastmilk is digested quicker and easier by baby causing them to feed more often, nothing wrong eith your milk at all. Also you produce prolactin the most at night so feeding at night is more effective if you want to produce more milk. I combi feed my little one and she has 3 bottles of formula in a 24 hour period at the moment, so example 6am formula 12pm formula and 6pm formula, breastfeed between them. Then at night I just breast feed, and I try to pump when she has a bottle so I have some breastmilk to feed by bottle also. Hope this helps x
