Breastfeeding

I’m starting to get a bit worried the last couple of days my 7week old won’t feed any longer than 10 minutes a feed. I offer both breasts but she refuses the second one so only takes from one breast at a time. Is this normal. I know all babies are different. I just don’t want her to not get enough milk. I feel like my breast have also gone quite soft is this normal? Does this mean I’m not producing as much milk?

After 6 weeks your supply starts to regulate (so kinda on a schedule for when you feed) whereas before you'd be constantly producing milk. Some babies do just fill up on one boob and then you can offer the other boob next feed.

@Gemma oh right okay! Because before when she would go a little longer my boobs would go quite hard where as now they just always feel soft. That’s what I tend to be doing is a boob each feed but what I’m worried about is that her feeds are not lasting longer than 10minutes Can this be normal, can she fill up during this She gets to around 8/9 minutes and just refuses.

If you skip a feed they will still go hard so it's important to keep emptying 😄 especially overnight 🫣 Is she cluster feeding? How long between feeds? She could be full or need a burp, sometimes they just need a little break too as it's tiring for them.

Ah ok we don’t really skip any feeds. She’s going 2-3 hours a feed Sometimes she will do 4 hours. I try burp and put her back on but she just shakes her head against me

This was us! I found it so stressful as I kept being told feeds should be around 20 minutes! But he was putting on weight just fine. If I could tell myself anything with breast feeding in the beginning. It would be not to stress. If they have enough dirty and wet nappies. Then that’s a sign they are getting enough. Seeing the lumps in the poo means they are getting the good fatty milk. If you have all of that then you are doing just fine xx

@Amy at the moment she’s not been having any lumps in her poo it’s been quite runny. She’s been gaining weight fine too and having plenty of wet and dirty nappies

By 6 weeks your baby kind of masters their latch and milk intake. 5mins is more than enough for baby to get what they need. 10mins is beautiful. Anything beyond 10mins is usually comfort nursing so staying on the breast longer doesn’t always mean baby is drinking the whole 20mins. They know how to comfort nurse and stop milk from flowing while sucking. So that’s perfectly fine

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 right ok, I think I’m just getting worried that she is not getting enough. But thank you for the reassurance. Is it normal for her to still be having such runny nappies x

Yea it’s normal. As long as she’s pooping and peeing, gaining weight she’s fine. Breastfed babies can also go up to 7days without pooping so if it happens in the future don’t be alarmed as well. Breastmilk is rich in calorie so the quantity matters a little less. When baby nurses, it comes out of 20+ holes so baby is getting a lot in 1 gulp. You’re doing really great!

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 thank you so much. I really needed the reassurance. My mind has been everywhere with worry x

I wouldn't worry about it! My daughter was only doing 5-10inute feeds and only one boob per feeding when she was around 5-6 weeks old. You LO likely has just gotten more used to it and therefore become more efficient at getting the milk! Some babies it takes a while to get that efficient but others it goes pretty fast.

@Salem thank you, I think I am more reassured by her feedings now. She’s getting weighed again tomorrow so shall see how much she has gained x

She also feeds longer on one breast does that mean she doesn’t get as much Milk from the other x
