Milk

Why is milk pushed so hard with kids? I have never understood it. Yes, it’s a lot of nurtients, but it’s simple to balance it out with other foods. I got yelled at over the phone 2 months ago by my lactation specialist/WIC lady saying I need to stop BFing my 10mo and give him cows milk. I don’t even buy milk? We’re a milk free house, and I refuse to buy the nasty shit. When I told her no, I won’t be giving him cows milk or any alternative she refused to reload my balance. Like? He loves cheese and yogurt and meats. Why you gotta be a bitch. Anyone else not doing milk in their house?

That’s wild to me that she was telling you to stop breastfeeding at 10months. WIC in MI wouldn’t give whole milk for baby til 1 year. Until then I only got 1%, because it’s supposed to be for myself I guess? 🙃 Just let them give you milk on the balance and don’t use it. Not reloading your balance due to that is messed up, honestly🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m with you! 🫶

Yes I’m having a hard time with this as well. The more I learn about our dairy industry the less I feel like my 1ye old need that. His dr said we need to get him off the bottle which I agree with but idk what to do because he still likes having a bottle before bed. I have found a local raw goats milk farmer, but I’m still so nervous to give it to him. Idk, trying to learn more. Drs also push fortified cereals which are a similar idea. Just give them the whole foods with those ACTUAL vitamins and minerals in them

@Meghan I was fine with the milk, I wasn’t saying to stop the milk. She just asked if I needed more milk since he’s drinking milk now, and I said no he’s only 10 months and not getting milk which is when she went off saying I shouldn’t be breastfeeding anymore I should be giving him cows milk and I told her not a chance. Everywhere says under 1 means no cows milk. The other lactation specialist in the WIC said it was great I wanted to BF until 2-3 the longer the better but since the other lady I spoke to is head dog she calls the shots… so I assume she said I don’t qualify cuz I’ve called and gotten hung up on twice, by that same lady as soon as I said my name, as well as it says balance 0. I’ve gone in and the others say there’s nothing they can do since she is the boss lady and finished the paperwork or whatever idk.

@Karli Right!? But around me that would be hard to find anywhere especially being not a massive place doing it. My doctor thankfully goes no cereal? Okay, that’s fine. No milk? Okay, that’s fine. Just be sure to add what he needs to get those vitamins, but obviously you do cuz he’s doing great. I’d 100% much rather give him what he needs instead of a filler… obviously being picky is going to come into play as he gets older but like… you deal with it when the time comes… not just here fix all with this milk.

@Karli If it's a farmer you can trust, I would absolutely go for the goat milk!! Do they do tours? Maybe if you could see exactly the process from goat to selling you could make sure everything's up to snuff. I was raised on goat milk, so I'm pretty biased lol

@Karli please do not give your baby raw goats milk. Make sure it is pasteurized! Raw/unpasteurized milk can cause serious health issues due to bacteria - especially in babies (even those over 1 year old) because of their delicate immune systems.

@emily yes they do tours and it’s only 25 minutes from our house! I also know a few families who recommend their farm and have been using their milk for years. For some reason I’m still hesitant.. maybe it’s just because of our cultures ouch back against raw

@ariel but that’s where it get confusing because that good bacteria is what makes milk so good for our bodies. Same with almost any food if you heat it at high temps for a long time it loses its benefits. People are aware of this with breast milk all the time. So we really shouldn’t be told to give our babies milk until they’re old enough to digest the real stuff

That's odd, from what I've seen switching to milk at 12 months is only really recommended for formula-fed babies, breast milk is more than sufficient at that age.

If you have the energy and time you could absolutely report the wic lady - that is unacceptable and retaliatory behavior. She is not your child’s doctor or parent and doesn’t get to decide how long you breastfeed! I’m so sorry you went through this.

That is fucked up! I would report her. My daughter doesn’t want to drink milk and the doctor said no problem! Just give vitamin D supplements

I just talked with someone from WIC today because I was there for a 1 year visit. It’s illegal for her to terminate your benefits for that reason. Definitely report her!

We're also a ⛔️ milk/ dairy-free household. My husband makes our daughter Banana 🍌 Milk🥛, which is basically just Kids Ripple (unsweetened) + banana+ hemp seed & a little bit of oats blended in to help thinken it up some... we can add vitamin D drops too if needed. She gets that 4× a day in substitution for cows milk. Sometimes we do Avocado 🥑& Banana for her healthy fats which she loves ♥
