Is it normal for breastfeeding to be painful with a new born and when does it subside?

Must be the way she’s latching, does everyone face this problem?

It definitely is super painful for the first couple of weeks. Lots of nipple cream and try some alternative positions, but it can really hurt!

Yes, sometimes, especially if your baby is cluster feeding and still learning to latch but it shouldn’t be unbearable. Look for signs of latch issues like a misshapen nipple. Mine were sore for a few weeks, especially after extreme cluster feeding sessions. Slathering on good nipple cream helped a lot!

Have a look at Jelonet, it helped me so much it’s really fast acting! Don’t be afraid to re latch baby if you don’t feel latch is right, it will be uncomfortable to start but after a few seconds you should feel comfortable, if it’s sore during the whole feed it is usually latch where your nipple is running against the roof of babies mouth.

Yes. It hurts. Everyone says ‘if it hurts you must be doing it wrong’. I’ve had several people check my latch and tell me it’s good and baby is feeding well. It just hurts. It gets better after a couple of weeks.

I've read and been advised that it's really rough for the first few weeks. With my first she had a tongue tie, so I pumped for 4 weeks, I feel like in doing this we almost skipped the tough times, by time she latched the tongue tie was sorted and my nipples were used to pumping, I'm nervous to try it again this time round!! Near us there is a support group called home start, they are based at the children's centres and offer feeding help and advice, they helped much more than the hospital did, so maybe ask a health visitor if there is anything local to you! X

It hurt terribly for a few weeks! I was curling my toes from initial pain. After 2-3 months it’s a pleasure. Keep going x

My son is only 4 days old (he’s my 3rd) but yes the latch can be super painful like makes my toes curl painful! However once they’ve latched it shouldn’t be painful, possibly just slightly uncomfortable. I’d get your midwife to check the latch otherwise you can risk really having your nipples torn up and it will make breastfeeding even more challenging. Also highly recommend lanolin!

Yes it hurts until your nipples toughen up, but it passes

My little one is two days old and wow it’s so painful this time round and I form remember it been like this with my first. The midwife today suspected tongue tie, so I have someone from the FAB clinic coming out tomorrow to double check and if so, we will go from there! I hope it eases for you soon and I hold out all hope because I know breastfeeding can be a pain free and amazing experience xxx

I had to bottle feed for a couple days when my son was a week old and go back to bf- once they healed from the initial cluster feeding I never had any problems but you have to be careful with bottles eg pace feed etc

It really hurt for me , I’m convinced he was latching too shallow. My nipples are quite flat and he is a tiny baby so it just wasn’t fitting together or working. I got nipple sheilds and that’s changed everything. Now he understands how to latch. But they’re not for everyone
