Swapping boobs mid-feed

My little girl is just over 2 weeks old and EBF. I have been feeding her one boob at each feed but the health visitor advised changing sides mid feed. Sometimes it’s quite easy if she unlatches herself for a second. I’ll stop to burp her, she starts rooting and then I can swap her over. Other times she’s really into the feed and I don’t want to force her off. I have a wound on my right nipple from when she latched badly on day one so that side is still a bit sore when I feed. She’d just been on for about 10 minutes and it was feeling sore so I took her off and brought her up to my chest to burp but now she’s fast asleep. I feel bad as she didn’t seem to be finished feeding and I was planning to pop her back on. How do you know when they’re ready to swap sides if they don’t unlatch? Should I take her off and swap feeds every time or should I just follow her cues?

She wouldn’t have fallen asleep if she was still hungry so don’t feel bad xx Just follow her cues in terms of switching sides. What would be the reason to unlatch and switch sides?

Thank you ☺️ the health visitor just said that most people swap mid feed. I think it’s to do with her getting a double dose of hind milk to build calories. This kid has piled weight on beautifully though so I guess I shouldn’t worry too much about her getting enough hind milk ☺️

I went to a breast feeding support group and they told me the hind milk at the end of a feed it a myth. Fatty deposits are released throughout the feed. A sign they are getting that is seeing lumpy bits in their poo. Gosh, if she’s piling on weight then you are doing just great. I feel HV can give advice that just complicates things!

I’ve never heard of swapping mid feed. Seems unnatural to stop midway a good feed? And I thought the goal is to let them deplete the breast before offering the other side. And if bub is putting on weight, then you are doing great! I wouldn’t change anything.

I only tend to swap breasts if she seems like she is falling asleep or is content then I wind her before giving her the other breast. Using your pinky finger at the side of their mouth helps to de-latch them. I think I just don’t like the thought of having odd breasts after feeds (one looks bigger than the other)😂 but most of the time if I don’t plan to leave the house then I’ll just do the one breast until she is full.

Thank you everyone 😊 I did think it seemed odd to swap. I think I’ll go back to doing what I was before and just following her lead x

What the midwife says is a bit back to front, if you want them to get more "hindmilk" you need to leave them on the same boob for longer (although foremilk/hindmilk has kind of been debunked now) If they naturally come off the boob and then shortly after seem hungry, you can offer the other. But I wouldn't be stopping a feed and purposely swapping
