Expressing

Can breast milk not fill babies up? I had my little girl 3 weeks ago, she was very poorly at birth so has only been home and feeding since Tuesday, she come home on 60ml/70ml, she now on 90.. she is always hungry & always snacking.. is it possible that it just isn’t enough for her? Thank you in advance xx

It’s more than likely that she’s cluster feeding trying get your supply up the title of your post is expressing are you expressing breastmilk or are you feeding her at the breast? Because milk that you’ve expressed; She needs no more than 5 ounces ever and all you pace feeding it to her because it can take 20 minutes for a baby to feel full but it definitely sounds like she’s cluster feeding so I would offer, ounces rather than a full feed

@Emma I’m expressing she isn’t on the boob as she was NG fed & they needed to know how much milk she was taking as she was poorly when she was born. It’s like when she is feeding she is sooo angry & pulls away from the bottle, spits the milk out 🤦🏼‍♀️ yet she’s always looking & showing cues for a feed. I have two children before & never had this 🤦🏼‍♀️x

I would definitely offer ounces, it could be because she was NG fed it’s more instant, whereas, being bottle fed she will need to work for it a bit more; so she’s getting mad that it’s not as quick. I know pace feeding is recommended, but maybe try a bit more of a passive feed so that she’s getting milk a bit quicker. And when she’s a little bigger go back to pace feeding x

@Emma I confused by what you mean ounces as 90ml is 3 ounces that’s what she gets x

@Hayleigh if she is cluster feeding and snacking, and you don’t want to waste a full feed, offer 1 Oz, instead of a full 3 Oz feed.

Breastmilk definitely fills them up.
