Pumping question

My baby (4months old) is exclusively breastfed directly from the boob, and recently I’ve started trying to pump for the first time so that I can freeze some breast milk. But 20 minutes of pumping each side I can only seem to get 1oz total? I’ve tried 5 times. My baby is satisfied after feeding directly and is growing well and putting on weight (very well on the 91st percentile) so he’s obviously getting enough milk, but why can’t I pump any out? I’ve used a hand pump and the electric one so I don’t think it’s the pump. Has by boobs got used to how my baby feeds so pumping doesn’t get the milk out properly, is that a thing?

I am not sure, but my health visitor said ‘you don’t love your pump like you love your baby’ and told me not to be surprised if I didn’t get a lot out especially at first when expressing- because your body probably won’t be producing the same levels of oxytocin. That might be totally wrong, but a possibility!

Keep going, it was the same for me as well. I don’t know if this happens for all moms but there are times when i can feel my milk coming in and that’s when I grab my pump. I also get more when I pump while feeding at the same time. I’ve gone from only getting 1oz to 5oz collectively. I think if I kept that up it would gradually increase but I’ve not had any reason to pump lately. But try that out and see if it works for u.

I only pump about once or twice a day just to add some to the freezer. I got about 1oz or less in a whole day until I remeasured my nipples and changed my flange size (I just used inserts instead of buying a whole flange thing again so I can vary flange size if needed). Now, I can usually get 2-3oz in the morning and 1-2oz in an evening and it's more comfortable - I usually only pump on the breast he hasn't fed on. I find having my baby sleeping on me or being near me helps my body feel calm and helps produce thhe hormones needed. Also massaging before and during pumping can really help getting things going. Just keep trying and your body will get used to it 😊

You need to try to pump every 3 hours ideally initially to get it going, that was advice I got from the lactation specialist and it worked for me

What time are you pumping? Directly after a feed or an hour or two after a feed? I ebf but express one bottle a day to stock Up and I usually pump between 1am and 4am as that’s when supply is highest and I get around 5oz from one side. Double check your flange size is correct too as this can affect it xx

Was coming to add what @Chloe has said - pump earlier for more milk. If waking is out of the question try going for between 7 and 8 am and check the flange size for your pumps to make sure they’re the best fit. Also a Hakka has been surprisingly good for collecting milk while feeding on the other boob. I usually get about 2oz passive milk collection with that

I haven’t started yet but asked a lactation consultant and was told to pump 5 mins each side after feeding. Also make sure flange size is correct 🤗

I’ve been trying to do this also but it’s been a bit pants! I don’t know if I’m taking too much and then when baba wants feeding she’s fussy like there’s none left lol but leaving an hour between… ? Also those that have said about flanges how do I know of the right size, mine does feel like it’s pulling a lot nipple and boob through?

@Marie if it’s pulling boob through it’s too big x Go a size down. Nipple shouldn’t rub the sides either x
