Feeding

This might seem like a really silly question but I’m a first time mum to a prem baby ! When do you know to start giving them more milk? If I give my baby 90ml he will suckle after to say he’s hungry , but he will also do that if you give him 120 ml, so when do I know how much milk is enough and how much I should be giving him? I don’t wanna over feed but I also don’t want to underfeed

I’m in the same situation with my 37 weeker, she just guzzles however much I give her, HV says you can’t overfeed but I’m not so sure x

My 3 week old was the same. What I found worked was keeping him on 90ml then if he still looked like he wanted more after the bottle, I give him a dummy and he would suckle for a few moments then spit it out and sleep.

My firstborn would just feed and feed to the point of making him sick. They do say you can’t overfeed a baby but my son definitely would take it all and then make himself have a tummy ache/vomit. I would say feeding until feeling settled/milk drunk is a good indicator. Fussiness may indicate discomfort/overfeeding. Cues of still being hungry - searching for breast/bottle, sticking out tongue, not being milk drunk. Do you use a dummy? If so, they will usually refuse a dummy if still hungry

@Becca perfect thank you ! Yeah he uses a dummy I’ll try this! X

My baby was born at 36 weeks 4 days and very low birth weight. I knew to up his feed when he would consistently drain his 90ml bottle and root for more! If bubba roots after a few bigger bottles, it’s not always hunger cues.. he could be experiencing some belly discomfort or trapped wind and is trying to soothe. I only offered him dummies after big feeds so that I didn’t miss his hunger cues x

I breastfeed now (second baby) but last baby I was bottle feeding and my baby would spit up/bonit if overfed xx
